Replacement Rear Wheel Arches
This is what they look like when they have been fitted. |
|
As our Bongos get older, we have to acknowledge that they are eventually going to fall victim to that dreaded enemy; RUST! And the very first place it will attack are the rear wheel arches.
If you have a look at the configuration of the body panels on a Bongo, you will see that the rear sections are very large. This is particularly true on the offside, where the full panel extends from the rear of the driver's door to the tailgate. Genuine Mazda panels are can be obtained from Japan, but are ferociously expensive due to the shipping costs. So we have been looking for an alternative. Club member John Barlow eventually came up with the solution, and they are available from www.perfectpanels.co.uk.
They are not an exact fit, but are pretty close. They will need to be cut and welded in to place. But in the hands of a skilled body shop technician, they will be an ideal solution. Note that the area immediately above the wheel is raised, rather than flush. This is why they are sold in pairs; you don't want a lop-sided Bongo! The part numbers are 3053508 & 3053509. This is what they look like from behind:
And here is a picture from Roger Clifton after the new arches have been fitted: For a relatively modest outlay, this could mean keeping your Bongo for another 10 to 15 years.
