Mazda Factory Built Kitchens

Some Bongos turn up with pre-installed kitchens manufactured by Mazda. These are excellent units and are always found at the rear of the vehicle on the passenger side. They consist of a single ring gas stove, a cool box, a leisure battery and a sink/water tank. A translation of the users manual can be obtained here.

There are two drawbacks with using these units. Firstly, they run from a 11o volt system, so a transformer is required (there is a fact sheet about this in the members area). And secondly, although the parts can be obtained from Japan, they are expensive and difficult to track down.

Self Build Conversions

Some people have made it their full time hobby converting their vans in to campers by constructing the units themselves. The above example is from John Cady who did this for his daughter's wedding present.

GP Car Sales of Stafford (see their website at www.campervan.uk.com) can supply full conversion kits for your Bongo. Also, many of the items you need for a self-build conversion can be found at www.grassroutesleisure.co.uk.

For those brave enough to go down this route, the Self Build Motorcaravanners Club have a very useful website at www.sbmcc.co.uk.

New Forest based Lifestyle Conversions will supply flat packs. See their website at www.lifestyleconversions.co.uk.

Yorkshire Conversions can also supply conversion kits. Their website can be found at http://hightop.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/

Also recommended are West Mids based Shaw Motorhomes. www.smconversions.co.uk or phone 01527 836389

Other Kitchen Units

If you have already bought a Bongo and want to get it converted, then most of Bongo converters will be too busy to do this. AVA, Westward and Coolconversions all provide portable units though, and Wellhouse have announced that they will be doing this shortly, but if you want a conversion that is tailored to your needs you could do worse than approaching the following companies.

Dave Chick (07704-170101) does something called a "Bongo Box".

It consists of a removable unit, with 16 cubic feet under-shelf storage.

The Wensum Motor Company near Norwich ( 01603 742806) are professional converters, and will tailor-make the units to your own specification.

Another one you could try is Cool Conversions of Newquay.Their units are constructed from top quality "vohringer" furniture board, and contain cooker/sink combination with piezo ignition, automatic tap and water pump, 12 L fresh & waste water canisters, 12v connection. Can be fitted as rear or side unit. Rear unit is bolted on to rails and can face in or out. Passenger side rear split-seat is removed to fit side unit. Dimensions approx 1100mm long x 600mm high x 400mm deep. They cost around £750 fitted. Contact Jack Ryan on 07790-719407, or visit their website at www.coolconversions.co.uk. They also do front L-shaped conversions.

Caravan Supplies of South Yorkshire (Unit 5, Kilnhurst Business Park, Glasshouse Road, Kilnhurst, Mexborough S64 5TH Tel: 01709-578727) will also do small, medium of full conversions in quality materials to customer specifications.

Bromsgrove based Shaw Motorhome conversions can build Bongo conversions to customer specifications. Telephone Paul on 07968-329264, email paulshaw244@hotmail.com

Finally, we have had good reports about Clearcut Conversions of Bideford (www.clearcutconversions.co.uk). They can provide all types of conversions for your Bongo from portable units to full conversions. Contact Richard on 01237-459050.
