Re: Oil Leak - Middle of the van

Yep it’s not major but there was oil on the ground and I get paranoid about anything like that. Other than it’s MOT this year (straight through) a year ago the heads, hydraulic lifters, water pump were all rebuilt and replaced by a Bongo specialist, maybe 1k miles ago

Hello and 2.0 problem.

... m guessing it's overheated before and the rings are shot hence the compression figures. I did test my compression tester against my calibrated test pump (I'm a boiler inspector/insurance surveyor) and it's accurate. Id guess the compression figures should be at least 100 psi, probably nearer 120 psi ...

... so they'll also get fitted.

I'm currently building a service shopping list for the donor engine which comprises the below,

Timing belt kit,
Water pump,
New valve cover gaskets,
Cam and crank seals,
Air/fuel/oil filters,
Spark plugs,
Thermostat,
Low coolant alarm,
Self bleeding kit,

Most of that ...

Re: Coolant replacement query

Help please. Very frustrated bleeding bongo.

I couldn't change the water pump in the end. The pulley bolts were to tricky so I settled with changing the belts I needed to do.

I also changed the coolant, even though I had no issues with the engine or coolant, but worried about it being just water. So ...

Re: Coolant replacement query

When you say the 'dry work' that can’t include the pump replacement as you will loose coolant.

If it looks like plain water in the system I would get it done ASAP as it’s getting cold.

The antifreeze also has a corrosion inhibitor, which is important and is why it must be replaced regularly.

Lastly ...

Re: Coolant replacement query

... aux belt. The suggestion previously was to replace both at once. That means then replacing all belts. Which then suggests may as well replace water pump at same time. Which then means replacing/ bleeding coolant.

My coolant is currently clear - so probably just water!

Again - any tips or should I ...

Coolant replacement query

... clear access under the car as I was hoping to do flat on driveway? If not I've got some ramps and axle stands.

I'm doing a belt change and water pump at same time. If I need to move the bongo or run the engine in between stages, will I damage the engine for a few minutes if running without coolant ...

Re: V6 breakdown symptoms

Seems to be running well again :D

Cambelt (broken), camseals x5 (one had failed), pulleys, water pump, thermostat, also rocker seals and Alt/fan belt (advised cracked/looked poor), plugs, fuel filter.

8h labour charged, plus I sourced all parts c.£400.
It appears a cam seal had failed, leaking ...

Re: Alternator belts

If you’re replacing the pump you’ll have to bleed it so you might as well take the opportunity to replace the coolant.

Re: Alternator belts

Thanks. Think the AC belt needs to come off, so will replace al three.

If I did water pump at the same time, do l lose loads of coolant, or just a bit i.e. can I just refill the system on partially with a bit of a bleed?

Re: Alternator belts

I can’t remember what has to come off to fit the fan belts, but it’s vital to fit a new pair.

The work is the same, cost minimal, and fitting one will cause trouble.

You definitely don’t need to remove the water pump to fit fan belts.

Alternator belts

... belt. I have very limited work space so tend to try to do every job from the top inside and on a hill(!)

If I can, do I need to slacken the water pump or can I make do just loosening the alternator. I don't want to refill coolant at the moment (and would replace water pump), but if it's genuinely ...

Re: V6 breakdown symptoms

Water pump & thermostat gaskets are usually in the kit.
It could be sensible to change the rocker cover gasket as it's likely to be worn out too, if it's as old as the other parts. If it leaks, the oil can affect the plugs.

Re: V6 breakdown symptoms

Water pump and Thermostat now ordered too!

(New but not sure gaskets included. Should originals be ok if replaced with care, or best change them too?) Can be returned within 30 days, in case she doesn't make it..

Re: V6 breakdown symptoms

... Yes it will.

That explains the oil leak was most likely from the cam seals and/or crank seal.
Change all 5 seals, hydraulic adjuster, 2 guide wheels, water pump and belt.
And change the thermostat while its dismantled.
It's a small extra cost that can save a lot of labour if changed on it's own.
