Identifying alternator...

Post by Chris-W » Sat Nov 03, 2012 6:39 pm

I'm having problems identifying my alternator.

The markings on the fitted alternator indicate that it's a "ATK AMA-406" rated at 90 Amps.

It looks the same as one I've seen for sale here and the electrical connector looks the same.

Engine is 2.5 TD on 4WD AFT, 1996 I think (N Reg).

Do you think this would be OK? I have contacted the seller, but was wondering if anyone here had come across this before.

Cheers

Chris

this is a well respected seller so it will be right.
not used one myself, but it needs to be at least 90 amp to power the bongo when demand is high, any less and it wont last.

If I were you I wouldn't get one from The Starter Motor Alternator Company. You'll find they are only rated at 80A. The electrical connector is not in exactly the same position either which makes it a ittle bit awkward to fit in. If you use the search function you'll find several threads about them. The best bet is to get your old one reconditioned if you have the time.

Albaston just a bit further down from Plymouth in Gunnislake are very well regarded & they can uprate it to 100A if you need the extra oomph to charge the leisure battery:

That's very interesting considering they advertise as 90AMP rated.

Do you think that they should be reported to the Trading Standards. :?

Hi thanks for the info I seem to remember now.....

Quote..

I sent them another email questioning the rating and it's suitability for a Bongo and got the following reply: "Have spoken to management they said we have supplied you with over your requirements because this alternator does charge up to 120 amps which is still a lot more than 90amp all we can do is you send it back to us and we will refund you.

Yes you are the first person to question this as we sell about 30 of them a month."

Who is buying them all and not questioning the fact that they are wrong?

Did you send it back and get a refund,or if you kept it,is it still doing its job.

Thanks for the information.

I kept it, and it's still doing it's job so I have to concede that it's not that bad. However, let's give it a few years use before coming to a final conclusion.
