Fitting air con belt

Anybody know which bit you have to slacken off to fit a new air con belt - it looks like it must be the idler pulley at the top of the belt run - is that right.

If so where is the adjuster please?

Even with the wheel dropped as far as it would go i found the new belt a bit tight to get on... I just kind of put it round the engine "idle pulley" over the "jocky wheel" & half on the compressor fly wheel, (after working out which direction tit all turned.) then gave a short crank of the starter & it jumped on to position... Before adjusting the tension back up.

Next question - H! T! F! do you loosen the centre nut?

I got at mine from underneath... From memory i had to remove the front half of the belly pan..? (It can be done without removing the whole lot.) Then loosened the nut with a yank from an extendible ratchet spanner. Scanner.

I was afraid of that - off to Yorkshire in an hour or so. Getting an SS exhaust fitted tomorrow so they will have in up in the air for that. Think I'll ask if they'll do it while it's up there.

That would be an easier option... I replaced a seized compressor on mine so the belt had snapped initially.

UPDATE

Mate with garage and better tool kit managed to free off nut in centre of idler pulley for me but even with that dropped down as low as it would go there was no way the belt I have had as a spare for 5 years now would fit over all 3 pulleys.

So after some searching around in Dayco's (the make of belt I had) website turned up a number of references for Bongos, Fredas, Rangers and B2500 pickups and with various belt lengths from 1000mm to 1030mm (which is quite a difference although it doesn't sound much) all by 13mm wide.

I called the local motor factors who I've used for years and they said their book says 13x1000 but it's not unusual for it being impossible to fit the "right" length belt, especially on engines like the Bongo where access is "difficult", so thery suggested trying a 1025mm one instead.
Much better it fitted over the crank pulley and the idler then just over half the way around the pump pulley. I stretched it around that as far as I could and then just blipped the starter and it wound the rest of the way round perfectly. I then just lifted the idler up until the belt was nicely, but not too, taut tightened up the centre nut and the adjuster bolt.

Thanks for all the help and my advice is - unless you want to lose enough skin to be able to plait your own belt, buy a 13x1025mm at least you'll be able to fit it easily.

As they say - an extra inch makes all the difference.

Yep, the same issue i had with the belt i got... After working out which direction the belt ran & positioning the belt the same way. I gave mine a V short crank..

What with the pulley adjuster, the centre nut & the belt positioning. (working from top & bottom.)
I found i was all over mine like a Chinese state circus acrobat!

ive been carrying the wrong sized spare for years, and had some more in stock. then i had a word with ian at the bash about them being too small, cannot remember the precise wording but it turns out the v6 and diesel part numbers are very close so are either mis-picked/supplied/labelled, the v6 being slightly smaller.

There is no way a 1000mm long one will fit a diesel, certainly not "at the side of the road", luckily the aircon belt is hardly "safety critical".

Must check now to see if the other 2x 1100mm long ones I have fit the alternator pulleys.
