Head Bolt Torque Settings

Post by Ian » Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:22 pm

I've just had a member on the phone who has queried this info which can be found in the "Head Gasket" factsheet:

The assembly procedure simply reverses the disassembly, which is the reverse of the disassembly, but the head bolts must be torqued up correctly, 10nm then 29nm plus two 90-degree turns: all in stages, one after the other. I could not find the head-bolt tightening sequence so I followed the standard procedure starting in the middle radiating clockwise one after the other. Use Tippex to mark the one you have just done, as it is very easy to get lost amongst 16 of the pesky things. Once torqued up to 29nm they then each need two additional 90-degree additional turns; again use Tippex.

These seem very low. Can someone confirm that they are correct? I'm away from the office at the moment and don't have access to the workshop manual............

According to the 'book' that seems right .. 3 basic toques ..

(Except for the two front bolts (A) as the two front (A) bolts are only torqued to 19Nm) ..

Nip them down all to 29Nm ..

Then angle tighten to 90 - 105 degrees ... then repeat the sequence and angle tighten them again 90 - 105 degrees ..

As per the WLT engine manual,

Tightening torque
29 N·m {3.0 kgf·m, 22 ft·lbf}
A
A
4. Put a paint mark on each bolt head.
5. Using the marks as a reference, tighten the bolts
by turning each 90°—105° in the sequence shown.
6. Further tighten each bolt by turning another
90°—105°.

The 29Nm does seem low, but that only takes the bolts to the beginning of their 'stretch' phase.
The following 2x90 degree turns (where the 'stretch' comes into play) takes some REAL force to achieve.
For us, it took a 4 foot tube to obtain the last 2x90 turns.
