Glow Plug Light Diagnostics

Post by Ian » Mon Sep 08, 2008 4:51 pm

Query from Gerry at Discount Trucks:

We have a 1999 fly by wire bongo 4WD diesel , after 30-40 mins of driving the glow plug light starts flashing (32 times per minute ). At the same time the power reduces . When left for 10 mins, the light goes off and the van goes great for another 30-40 mins when the same thing happens again .

Any ideas ? I understand that the number of times it flashs is a diagnostic answer to the problem ??

For Bongo with electronic pump (from september 99) engine diagnostic:
To obtain the codes you need to know where the diagnostic connector on the car. Find it is not difficult. It should look under the glovebox box in front of the front passenger's feet and his hard not to notice. He closed lid with the inscription "Diagnostic", but under the lid is such a picture:
Image
1. Set the ignition is in the "OFF".
2. Install a jumper between "TEN" and "GND".
3. Set the ignition is in the "ON"
4. Read codes and write here, and I will try to explain

Temporary intervals: A - 1.2 seconds, B - 1,6 seconds, С - 0.4 seconds, D - 4,0 seconds, E - 8,0 seconds.

Wow thats fantastic , the wonders of the web!! Well it looks like the light is flashing at 1,2 second intervals so not quite sure what that means , do I need to clear the fault first or rectify the fault большое спасибо hope thats right !

hi well I must first say how greatfull I am for your help so far , I have got the following flashs written down , can you make any sense of them

1 long flash 2 sec gap 1 short flash
1 long flash 2 sec gap 6 short flash
1 long flash 2 sec gap 4 short flash
1 long flash 2 sec gap 9 short flash

4 sec gap

1 long flash 2 sec gap 1 short flash
1 long flash 2 sec gap 1 short flash
1 long flash 2 sec gap 1 short flash
1 long flash 2 sec gap 2 short flash

The sequence then repeats itself again ?

Gerry, first code P1649 - wrong signal from pump modul constant memory (some wire disconnect in 8 pin connector on top of the pump),
second code you read not right. Friendee do not have code P1112. All Friendee engines codes i wrote early.

Hi

I am very sorry I have sent you the wrong code, it should be 1312 and on the EQUUS link you kindly sent, it says Injection Pump Timing Actuator Circuit , we are going to swap all the electrical parts on outside of the pump and clear the codes as you have suggested and then try the car again . I will let you know what happens . I cannot thank you enough for your help

Gerry,
I have a W reg tin top that had the same problem as you, it went back to the dealer on a couple of occasions but the problem remained. It was connected to the diagnostics system and produced several faults, all around the vacume system/ EGR(post 99 models have 2 EGR's i think)/ fuel system. I think i solved the problem myself by manualy moving the vacume rod severall times( under passenger seat) & spraying some contact oil on every electrical plug i could find under the drivers seat.
There are several threads on this site if you search glow plug flash.
i hope this will help & good luck, remember it's good to get your hands dirty

Thanks for your input .... Gerry

Hi Demon AV Hoping you can help with this problem we have now changed the whole injector pump . it is a Zexel pump. We were told by the people who service our pumps that the "Injection Pump Timing Actuator Circuit " is situated just below the head on the pump and that it can be troublesome and so we swaped it for a unit from another pump . This gave us LESS driving time before the light came on . We then changed the whole pump using the second actuator , not the one from the first pump. It ran for the same length (around 12 mins) We put the original actuator in the second pump and it ran exactly the same as the very first time around 30 mins, almost to the nearest 100meters on the motorway !! The code is 1312 can you suggest any other things to try . One other thing , if you clear the code from the car and remove the two cable plug the light flashes immediatly and the code comes in at 1312 that is without driving anywhere ! Also when the light begins to flash, the pump timing goes out , slight diesel knock .

Hi Gerry.
Check the fuel filter and fuel lines before pump. 1312 said the lack of fuel during heavy acceleration. 1312 is error the angle injection lead valve on the warm motor.
Number 37 on this pic http://www.demonav.ru/For_work/104700-0530.PNG (look http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 12#p196512 about our pumps)
Try to get fuel from clean bottles without using fuel filter. And try to drive with heavy acceleration.

Hi Demon AV

You have almost sorted the problem ,today we connected the injection pump to a clean tin of diesel in the passenger footwell ( and also changed the ignition barrel and a relay ) We did 80 k's no problem !! Came back to the workshop and reconnected the fuel pipes to the injection pump and only managed 20 k's . Tomorrow we are going to remove fuel tank and clean it and then work our way down the fuel line replacing or cleaning everything as we go ! It looks as though this fault is fuel starvation after engine is warm !

I will let you know the next instalment , have you had this problem before ?

Hi Gerry.
Some our owners has 1312. And this problem was gone when fuel filter was replaced. May be also replace fuel filter holder can solve this problem.

Tell you what guys. This thread has been riveting, and what a pig of a job for what may turn out to be such an 'ordinary' problem. There's been a small crop of similar problems on here, with people wondering if fuel tank filler cap wasn't letting air in etc. It would be very interesting to see what the final verdict is. Keep us posted. 8)
