ABS- dash light permanently on
OOPS!
Have been tarting up my mankey wheel hubs and brake calipers with a lick of paint now that i can see them through the spokes of my nice new alloys. Truoble is, as i have rotated the wheels individualy whilst doing so I've messed up the ABS. or that's what i've been told by a little birdie! Can anyone shed light on the matter and tell me how i can get out of my latest cock up?-Please
Re: ABS- dash light permanently on
Hi,
Whats most likely happened is that either the sensor has become dislodged or the wire has become damaged - if you've been doing some pretty beefy wire brushing it may be that the wire has become damaged. Have a good look for any breaks and make sure the connectors are ok - though from what I've seen the connectors are a good way away from the hub (other side of the chassis member at the rear - wouldnt know about the fronts as mine have been pinched - see my other posts
).
If its only just come on then its most likely to be wire damage - have a good look - easiest way maybe without taking wheels off, is to take the govebox out, locate the 008 connector (diagram from other helpful souls on my other posts!) which is next to the ABS ECU, undo it, then for each of the wheel sensors see if any have an open circuit - all should register a certain resistance. If they all check out ok, then next most likely culprit is that the sensors are ok, but they've pulled out a bit so can't detect the abs rotor on the hub/axle - in which case give em a little push (this worked on old Audi's as they were a push fit, they seem bolted down on the bongo so I'm not too sure of this).
Good luck - BTW used sensors are like Hens teeth (no breakers got back to me on ebay!) and new ones are >£150 each!!!
cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve, many thanks for that advice, have had a good look and couldn't see anything obvious. The sensor housings are very robust and as you say both they and the wiring are well to the rear and well away from the hub & caliper. It was suggested to me that rotating each wheel individualy confused the sensors, don't know if there is any mileage in that though. Have the old girl booked in to garage on monday as i find vehicles a pain in the butt outside of actually driving them. Mind you, i'm also pretty cheesed off with bills so thuoght i'd ask to at least learn a little from you guys.
