erratic fuel gauge!!

Post by Pablobongo » Thu Jun 25, 2009 8:12 pm

Just picked up my bongo after being the winning bidder on ebay,i have to say i am quite disappointed :( ......was described as VGC, for a 14 year old van i was quite happy with the exterior, a couple of scratches and tiny spots of rust here and there, but overall quite tidy!, but opening the drivers door a horrible whiff of dogs hit me full in the face!, dont get me wrong, i am a dog owner myself, but this was horrible! all the seats and carpets were full of dog hair and also, the seat are fairly dirty/stained.Looks like a full valet at my local eastern european car wash!.
Anyway, to get to the point, when i drove her away (drives really lovely), the fuel gauge was reading half full, Bonus! thought I......so i pulls into the next service station, thinking£25-£30 should fill her up nicely......£4 later and diesel all over my foot!!, tank was completely full, and fuel gauge now reads quarter full?!.....20 miles later down the motorway she reads below empty!!.......please help, is the only remedy to fit a new fuel sender?.....I am a first time bongolier, and would appreciate some advice.

doubt if you could get a new sender, it would have to be a replacement from a breakers.dunno about cost, worry about the cost only if its the sender.

Don't even think of replacing the sender unit until you have done the earthing thing

Hi Pablo
For the dog pong, do the clean-up yourself...Buy a cheap steam-cleaner, and give the interior a treat. Personally, If it has overmats, I would use a Karcher on them....I do so once a year to get rid of all traces of dog, and use an airvent freshener on full blast for a week or 2. You might consider running the engine, bonnet up, fan and aircon on, and squirting a good spray of "Oust" or similar in, and use a quality upholstery cleaner everywhere. For dog hair, wrap sellotape round your hand, sticky side out, and stroke/ pat everywhere BEFORE shampooing everything, then steam it......You'll do a far better job yourself!
Good luck....and the fuel gauge is an easy job
Cheers
Helen
In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

Thanks for the tips guys, must admit though, took it to my local auto valeting firm, and 4hrs later.....its a different van!!!, sent wifey up into the freetop with a roll of sticky tape (dog hairs really do get everywhere!) and really gave the old girl a birthday (van, not wifey)...and like i said, totally different van from the one i picked up yesterday, also took missfixit70s advice and recovered the cubby box and cup holder lid with some dark grey fabric, and now it looks the business!!...will attempt the fuel sender earth over the weekend!! :D

Congrats on the Bongo Pablobongo and glad it is responding to treatment :D Hope it goes on to give excellent service. Send pics if you can (we like pics) 8)

PS - were you happy with the winning bid price on ebay - I've seen some nice looking Bongos go at quite cheap prices so am always curious as to what they are like 'in the flesh'

Well, after missing out on a lovely looking silver AFT, with elec hook up, leisure battery and original roof mattress, by a bid of £50.... i was pleased to have won the auction for a green AFT 4WD with 77000 miles one the clock and 1 careful owner since import, after a couple of chats on the phone prior to bidding, i decided that this was "the one". However, when i collected her, i was very disappointed to find, that it was absolutely filthy inside, the outside had roller spray down one side where someone had painted a house with it parked too close, wheel trims were missing, and the fuel gauge was not functioning properly., So as it was described as "VGC, clean and tidy" and everything in working order, i did feel a little aggrieved, especially as i had the conversations with the owner concerning these matters, questions like "has it been smoked in?" and "is the headlining clean?". As i drove away, i was far from happy......really disappointed by how some people are economical with the truth, but being a man who does not back out of a contract, I bit my tongue and drove away.

Now i have had her 48 hrs, she looks and smells like a different van, spotlessly clean and new door pulls fitted, recovered the cubby box and cupholder lids, i am happier now with my purchase.....dare i say pleased. The price i paid was not bad compared with the buy-it-now bongos from dealers, but i feel that if i had paid £250 less for her, that would have covered the cost of the valeting, wheel trims, ariel, in dash cubby box.....and possibly fuel gauge sender that i am in the process of replacing.
