Last call for Aircon ..

Post by Cosmic Bus » Sat Mar 12, 2011 11:27 am

Have been noticing for a while now that horrible tell-tale sign that's something is leaking but unable to pin it down. Thought it was the rear Aircon unit again but couldn't see anything.

Decide once and for all to trace it, and upon further 'head-sticking-underenath-vehicle' mode I saw this,

Either new pipe time or just blank the rear off completly this time and have done with it. Bah.

On a side note, after having fuel guage issues, and deciding on what to do, i notice the tank already has an extra wire. Saves me ajob at least, new screws and a clean up. Hopefully

Must apologise for terrible spelling in above post. Anyway. Removed the tank screw, cleaned the eye on the end of the wire, new self tapper in and went up to 3/4 tank from empty :)

One less thing out of the way.

I've removed the whole system, (rad, element, pump, condensor, and pipe work) it's not needed on the East Coast of the Highlands anyway.

The van now runs cooler, about 5 - 10degs cooler. The blowers feel stronger (no element in air ducting), plus when it came to changing the stat it was easily done from above. I've not been missing it yet. Might be a bit different if we have a hot summer though...but what are the chances of that?

When I bought my Bongo, the vendor said the aircon needed regassing. I paid for an aircon engineer to look it over and he found it had a fractured pipe. The vendor had contacts in the automotive business and one of them was persuaded to fabricate a replacement pipe (Mazda ones cost a fortune) at no cost to me and all done, fitted, system regassed before I completed the deal and collected from 200 miles away the next day.

This tale suggests that there might be pipeworkers out there who could knock up replacements for not too much dosh. Not having aircon was not an option for me: my missus was very anti-Bongo anyway and the non-opening windows meant she would have shot me if I bought one that did not have workng aircon. :?

Finally got round to looking at lush projects ..

So if anyone has 61-301, the thin pipe in the middle, going spare etc and ease of fit, then mucho appreciated

I did think the other night though, I wonder if 'I' busted it. I might have give it run in the cold weather. Could the gas have frozen? Pretty sure I ran it when it was over 4 degrees outside but may have been not by much.
