All steamed up

Post by thedogsbollox » Tue Jun 07, 2011 8:38 pm

Was driving today and noticed steam from up front.
Put the heaters on and stopped as soon as i could.
Opened bonet to find coolant all over the place
Was worried that the LCA didn,t kick off.
AA man pressurised the rad and we couldn,t see any leaks
He suggested it could be the thermostat.
wanted to remove it and get me going.
I suggested he get me relayed back home so i could sort it myself and bleed it properly.
I felt the rad bottom hose and it was cold so does this all point to his diagnosis?
BTW, after the AA man had spilt some coolant the LCA was alarming alright so i didn't lose a lot of coolant.
Just before the Bash, just what i need.

Good job you saw the steam eh, could have been alot worse.
But thats what the LCA is for, so no real harm done, fingers crossed, just a bit of the F factor.

Sounds like it airlocked & pressurised the system, popping the pressure cap, this wouldn't set off the low cooalant alarm (nothing is perfect  ) but the high level add on would have picked it up. Check for pinholes, rad seam weeps, etc, may be worth pressure testing the coolant system. Good luck [-o<

maybe an idea to replace the waterpump while the systems down mate if its age unknown. they can be hard to spot leaking on a pressure test, and askirsty says check everything--twice.

New waterpump 2009 with my head episode. Will try that pressure tester i got from a very nice man, if i can find it. Was told by AA man that when pressurised, the pressure will either rise or fall momentarily when the engine starts, this will indicate the water pump working ok.
