Sediment and battery charge warning lights?

Post by Stargazer » Mon Aug 01, 2011 9:50 am

Just come back from a long journey and these two warning lights have come up? What does this mean and how do we fix it?
Thanks in advance :D

The two lamps together means faulty Alternator, it can probably be exchanged fairly easily. Might be worth checking the cables and connectors first just in case one has got any corrosion etc on the pins.

Yes agree it will be an alternator related problem, same thing happened to us last week.
Firstly check that the two alternator belts are attached and moving when the engine is running. Have a look with the passenger seat up.
If they are, then it is probably the alternator itself and a new unit will sort the problem out.
Good luck
Why?...........Because somebody might wave back.

Shot alternator for certain.

Be very wary of the cheap Taiwan ones on ebay, I had one that destructed itself in a fortnight.

Check the alternator output, with engine runnning should be between @ 13.8v & 14.5v. Usually it's a stuffed alternator though, if you get a refurb, make sure it's a comparable unit, Karena on here got one that was not as big as the original unit & didn't last long at all, if possible get yours refurbed at a reputable place & mark it to make sure it's yours you get back

Although its almost certainly the alternator its worth checking other things first

Fuse number 1 by drivers knee will cause this if blown
I had it when the earth on my leisure battery was not good so ran down the battery ( lb connected to fuse 1)
A blown battery could show this as it won't charge as would a bad connection.
A high draw gadget in the lighter socket has been known to cause this too.

so before spending out on a replacement alternator do a bit of checking first and rule out the free / cheap fixes

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice on this....Can always rely on you, fantastic!!!

I See on the "techie pages" that someone else is having the same trouble!!!

I have checked everything else so must be alternator problem....Can anyone suggested best place to get one? e.g Do "Bongo Fury" sell a decent replacement for a reasonable price?

Thanks again

as kirsty says above, make sure you get the correct one especially if doing an exchange, there are a lot of bad ones about.
i had a look under a ranger bonnet the other day and the alternator is the same fitting/mounting/wiring but has a black band painted round it.
the bongo has a green band. according to all the bumf i can find the 2 alternators are 90 amp, but i am concerned that the ranger one is not man enough to do a bongo as it has a lot less lecky stuff on a ranger, maybe its the dual battery workload thats overworking them, but two bongos with single battery systems only, had failures inside 12 months on the black painted replacement ones.
its your money but i would only go for a green banded original/secondhand part, even if its years old.
anyone have any thoughts.
