My automatic bongo has stalled...

hi, I have just bought a bongo which I love. She has been driving lovely and I was out earlier and she stalled... It's an automatic 4wd one. Diesel. I got her going again after a few attempts and it was ok, turned the corner and it stalled again! I has been told to drive it in S, so I changed to D and it didn't stall but I don't know if that was the problem. Any ideas? Being as female with no knowledge of cars I apologise in advance if this is an easy question. Regards :D

Drive it in D
Half way down the gear shift lever is a button....when pressed a "HOLD" warning will show on the dash. Do not have this showing ....So...untill you get used to your Bongo Just drive in D and no HOLD light on dash.....you will learn more as you go on.

Whatever you do with the gearbox controls you cannot cause the engine to stall. If it does there is either an engine issue (most likely) or gearbox issue.

Hi thank you for the reply, I got her home and said to my husband about it and he couldnt understand it either, anyway he took her out and she was ok for a bit then it happened to him! Thank god it just wasn't me. It's happened a couple of times now so we don't want to drive her in traffic, the mechanic in his work looked at it her and said it was a sort if pump, when you take your foot off the throttle to slow down at low speed, there is some some of piston that puts extra diesel in the keeps the revs up, sometimes they stick, so cool just need to get one, however as you can gather don't know what the part is called have you got any ideas? Thanks in advance and if you can resolve from a girls description well done lol
It had nit stalled just cut out...

It might just be a clogged up fuel filter. As the revs drop the suction of the fuel pump may just not be enough to suck the fuel through hence the stall.

As the revs increase the suction power rises and it pulls enough fuel through.

So

First start seeing if the stall happens if you are driving it when the fuel cap is not in place (If the cap is bunged up, a vacumn might just build up in the tank and require that little bit more suction than the pump is able to provide). - Easy fix just put the fuel cap in a pan of soapy water and bring to the "boil". blow it dry and refit.

2nd potential solution. Change the Fuel filter. Dont forget the banjo jobby as well.

3rd potential solution there may just be a start of a breakdown in the seals of the fuel pump, so that rather than sucking the fuel through it is sucking air!. I solved this problem initially by fitting a simple 12 volt pump in line between the tank and the fuel filter so the fuel pump was being charged by fuel under pressure rather than having to suck it up from the tank.
That "fix" was good it kept the bongo going till I could get a new seal fitted in the fuel pump proper.

Costs of solving the problem
1. Nowt.

2 Fuel Filter between £25 and £30 pounds,

3. Interim extra pump £25. then £110 to have the fuel pump proper removed and seal replaced.

This does nor rule out a problem with the transmission, but will at least give you a place to start.

because its a 4wdrive, check the wheels/tyres are the correct size, you say it was stalling whilst turning.

Not so. Incorrect tyre sizes can cause issues but will not cause the engine to stall, the only way the driveline can stall the engine is if the lockup clutch comes on when the vehicle is stationary/just moving. I am fairly confident this isn't the case here & that there is a fuel issue, probably minor once found.

Hi, just thought I would update you to what the problem was..... We took her to a bongo specialist, and we have been sold a duff, they found the head gasket had been skimmed and they haven't changed the cylinder head, the rocket cover is leaking and held together with chewing gum, the fuel system is piped up the wrong way, the t piece is leaking water, the heating resisters broke....so sad times for bettsie, £1700 to fix, were not sure what to do now so need some time to think. Is this advise from a bongo garage?..

have you tried new fuel filter and clean banjo? or maybe put a clear bit of fuel line in before fuel pump to see if there is air ingress?

Janice - I'm choosing my words carefully here but either the "specialist" is fobbing you off with drivel or you are mishearing what's being said.

A head gasket can't be skimmed, it's a gasket(or seal) The cylinder head doesn't always need to be changed.
It's possible there's been sealant put on the rocker cover to stop a leak - not good practice but hey, it works
A fuel system wrongly piped would mean the engine wouldn't run.

Can you get something written from the garage and post it on here. That way we can try to help more - what's being told to us isn't making a lot of sense.
