Team Muz Cornwall tour

Post by Muzorewa » Sun May 01, 2011 5:53 pm

Well the last couple of years has seen us heading north of the border so for a change this year we decided it was time to torment the southerners. To make it a tour worth doing we had better go as far as we can go – Cornwall :D

Many thanks to Alison01326 for ideas where to go, a bit of local knowledge makes a big difference as this was all uncharted territory for all of us. Thanks also to Allans Vehicle Services who did some emergency brake repairs even though their garage was closed – a top job which kept us mobile :D

Bank-Holidays on the M5 are legendary, so to avoid getting stuck behind a load of shed-draggers we set off at 11.30pm Maundy Thursday  .....

....to arrive at Salcombe, Devon to a glorious sunrise

Image
From Salcombe the kids wanted to see Hope Cove in Devon

....containing a chainsaw to cut up the wrong yacht in “The Supergrass”

Image
Next up – Allans Vehicle Services in Plymouth to deliver a kitchen unit from Burnley :?

Image
Then the Torpoint ferry from Devon to Cornwall – free too

Image
There’s nothing like a ferry crossing to give that sense of adventure :D

Image
Then for another shortcut across the Fowey....

Time to check in to our main accommodation for the week. We had been there only minutes when the alarm went off on the Bongo. This normally happens when I’ve left one of the windows partially open – so Jr was despatched to check it out. He returned moments later to tell us that someone had backed into the Bongo – and it took him a while to convince us that he wasn’t having a laugh....

“I didn’t see it!!” she sobbed. Should have gone to SpecSavers

I did get a round of applause for providing the afternoon’s entertainment

So there you have it, a top holiday in a place I would happily go back to again

Hi Paul

Fantastic photos looks like you had a lovely time.

Nice to see Porthleven in there as well, spent many a holiday staying on a campsite at the back of the rugby grounds.

We were going back to Woolacombe this year but seeing those photos makes me think again! :-k

Rob - No, all the pasties were eaten on sight. Weather ace all week.

Graham - Porthleven was voted worst beach out of the many we sampled, too stony for their delicate feet.

Ann's pasties were voted best, narrowly ahead of Philp's and the ones from Asda (which were Rowe's not Asda's regular stuff). The vegan pasties in wholemeal pastry were voted a definite zero

Hi Paul,

Having spent a few days up in the North West the other week, (Applecross, Gairloch, Ullapool, Lochinver) Mrs_Aber has decided that in August we will be Bongoing to Cornwall. So, thanks for the photos and some inspiration.

Speak to Alison (01326) - she should work for the Cornwall tourist board

Great photos

We're headed in that direction in a few weeks time too, so hope the weather is as good as you had.

I too always put the jam on first for the same reason

Yes, it's amazing what you forget in 30 years. did you go up to the Loe Bar - I think it was river mouth/estuary that took boats into Helston once upon a time.

Did you try the chippies in PorthLeven by the way?

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous - I loved every pic and esp. the regular punctuation marks of Mrs Muz and Muzette enjoying a pastie. Well done Alison for helping you set up such a(nother) amazing tour.

You should get a lifetime award from BF for services to travelogue photography.

One day maybe, I will find more freedon to roam - I only wish I had a family that realised what they are missing just hanging round the neighbourhood.

Oh, and I didn't see one cloud in the sky - how lucky were you!?!?!

Last things first, in Cornwall the jam DOES go on first. In Devon it's the other way around. We have no need to mask the taste of our clotted cream by burying it in jam!!!

Stunning photos, Muz. You should be working for the Cornwall Tourist Board :D Glad the weather stayed find for you and you managed to visit so many places (including all the pasty shops I suggested as well as Roskillys  ). Rowes pasties are better from the bakery. They tend to get a bit sweaty lying around in Asdas!!

Can't believe you got away with stopping over in Church Street Car Park. Well done, that family =D> =D> If I'd known you were there I'd have come and let your tyres down in the night. Tis only a mile from me (but preferable to sleeping outside my house as I live on a bend!)

Come on down, the rest of you. The weather is statistically not very wet (although it's been grim today). http://travel.uk.msn.com/british-breaks ... =157096149

You wouldn't remember it, as it was more than 30 years ago!!! 700 years ago there was (allegedly) an earthquake which threw Loe Bar (a sand bar) across the mouth of the River Cober turning Helston from a port into an inland town. Alternatively it is attributed to a giant dropping a bag of sand even more than 700 years ago

All joking aside, there was a bit of an earthquake up in north Cornwall on Friday night! Anyone up that way feel anything (about midnight). Keep comments clean, please!

Terry Wogan was there for the Earthquake

Was he? Which one?

Helston Flora (no "l" unless you're Bristolian) is next weekend. It's on Saturday 7th. Traditionally it is held on the 8th but if that falls on a Sunday (Lord's Day) or Monday (Market Day) it's the Saturday before. Bit miffed because I've got to work and I'll probably miss Flora Day but get stuck in Flora Day traffic.

Padstow Obby Oss is tomorrow instead of today for the same reason (ie traditionally held on 1st May, but it's a Sunday).

It's all happening here :D
