There's been a few cancellations and re-allocations for this event. So we still have available 4 electric and 1 non-electric pitches.

We are going a day earlier as it is a long way for us to come from Peacehaven. We would like to visit the lake district and wondered if someone who knows the area could advice on where the best scenery might be, like waterfalls etc. but not too far to walk from access by road on the bongo. I am also hoping to go on the train from Dent to Appleby. Is there a special tourist train and is it worth trying to get tickets in advance? Could this maybe be organized by he club?

Looking forward to Dent, meeting everyone and your replies.

Manny, I can't answer your question about sight seeing in the Lakes. But I do know about public transport in Dent Dale.

The railway station at Dent is actually 5 miles from Dent village, but there is a bus that runs from the village to the station on Saturdays only (564A). It leaves the village at 0950 to connect with the 1016 train to Appleby. You will be in Appleby for 1045. No advance reservation needed.

Coming back you leave Appleby at 1447, arrive Dent Station 15018. Bit of a wait for the bus, but you will be back at the campsite by 1645.

Hi Manny

If you want a day in the Lakes head off to Pooley Bridge at the bottom end of Ulleswater then catch one of the trip boats that ply the lake. A great day out.

I'll be at Dent from Thursday afternoon. South Lakeland is my home patch and I'll be happy to advise. The campsite is however better situated for exploring the Yorkshire Dales/North Pennines. It's a bit of a thrutch to most Lake District destinations.

Harry. Is your comment about Ulleswater a leg pull? It is not like you to get your geography confused. Pooley Bridge is at the North end or the top of Ulleswater. Surely you mean catch a boat at Glenridding at the Southern end or the bottom of Ulleswater.

Don't both of you great mountaineers mean Ullswater (with one 'e').

Yrs

P.S. What is a 'thrutch' !?! Sounds vaguely rude.

Manny, Ian is right about Dent being nowhere near Dent station.

Have a look at the first part of THIS thread, you'll see that the most interesting part of the Settle to Carlisle line is just further south, through Blea Moor tunnel and over Ribblehead viaduct.

Appleby itself is a nice little town but there's not really much there, the castle is privately owned and not open to the general public but you can get in with prior arrangement. Carlisle would be a much better option for an interesting place to visit.

For waterfalls, the waterfall trail from Ingleton takes some beating, there's a circular walk up the rivers Twiss & Doe with some spectacular falls if there's been rain recently. http://www.ingletonwaterfallstrail.co.uk/

Pooly Bridge is at the bottom end of Ulleswater cos thats where the river flows out of it. Its also the nearest place of Lake District tourist intrest to Dent. So there!
If I were going on the Settle/Carlisle from Dent I'd head south rather than north. Better scenery and lots of great towns/villages to visit.
See y'all thursday.

Ah! a scientific answer and a good one. But it is going to be lost on a lot of folk who think in terms of up north and down south I'm afraid.

Thanks everyone, that's has given me some options. Perhaps we should do the full Settle to Carlisle train journey so we don't miss anything! I will be going to the Lakes even if it is a "thrutch" , I have a bongo you know! :) Hope we get good weather, at least some dry days. See you all there.

I'll second that, although I stayed at the Patterdale end dof Ullswater!

Ah... good point - haven't checked the pots for rust yet this year.

What would you like on the menu? How does this sound?

[*]Fresh baked bread
[*]Beef chilli
[*]or Chicken and Yellow Split Pea stew
[*]Apple/rhubarb crumble with custard

:D =P~ =P~
