Just received yet another adaptor cable. A continuity test shows that only two pins in the diagnostic plug end feed the reader connector. These are FEN (missing on my plug) and a blank position on row 3. The +B power pin is not connected. That's why the reader will not work!

I've got an adapter lead at home somewhere. I'll try to buzz it out if I can find it.

I had a quick look into OBD a month or so back, I didn't get chance to try it out but my research lead me to the following forum post...

http://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5

It doesn't mention the Bongo specifically but I think with a little tweaking that it could be used to make forscan work with the Bongo. I have all the bits somewhere to give it a go - so when I get chance I will have a play.

If anyone else beats me to it, then please post which pins you connected to which!

Thanks

This looks promising. I will have a go at connecting the diagnostic plug tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!

Simon another page of interest

from above
Short history of OBD-I diagnostic systems:
OBD-I is a generic term given to any diagnostic system prior to 1996's introduction of OBD-II.
OBD-I is a blanket term and not an industry standard set of codes like we see with OBD-II. MECS-II is considered OBD-I, EEC-IV is also considered OBD-I. which is why we have to specify the difference in methods. Just because your car is OBD-I doesn't mean you'll use the same diagnostic system as an OBD-I BMW, Toyota, or Honda. Each manufacturer had their own OBD-I system. Mazda used MECS-II and Ford's EEC-IV system.

It Works!!! Connected Autel MS309 as per the second diagram (Mazda 626 2000) and it reads the codes and scans perfectly. I have a duff lambda heater. Awesome!! Many thanks to all for the help and advice.

Yup I've tried several to no avail on the R reg V6 of ours! I think the ECU's changed significantly after 2001 at some point to include the additional data channel.

Geoff,
I am going to try connecting additional wiring per the diagram for the 97-99 626 and see if that works on our V6. Fingers crossed!
Cancel that! Diagnostic plug on our V6 does not have pins at the two locations. We do have a FEN terminal so diagnostics may be possible using a shorting link per the fact sheet but I don't know which light will flash as we have no 'check engine' light.

No on the older pre 2001 you have to add the lamp on the output pin, then they changed so that the flashing light also did the code, then I suspect they brought in the OBDII channel.
Mine works with an LED or bulb added for the output just fine.
