Rear Heater

Post by Lemner » Sun Jul 10, 2022 11:20 am

Hello All,
My rear heater fan has been intermittent for a while and now doesn't work at all.
When I switch it on via the switch by the steering wheel I cannot hear a relay click and the light on the switch doesn't come on.
The fuse under the bonnet is ok.

Does anyone know where I might find the relay please?

Many thanks
Ian

Is it the Electronic Climate Control type or the older Manual slider controls ?

Many thanks Geoff, that's spot-on.
It looks like the relay is by the heater controls in the middle of the van.

Cheers

Hello Geoff,
Thanks again for the information supplied.
There must have been a bad contact somewhere. I pulled all connectors apart, tested the relay on a battery, checked the on/off switch at the front and for some reason it all works now!

Yes not an uncommon outcome! What with the vibration and possible condensation around connectors its a frequent problem that contacts build up some mild corrosion which with a little jog disappears! I make a habit of once in a while just moving all the fuses a little bit especially in the under bonnet holders to try and prevent these sorts of problems :-)

Hi Geoff

Recently bought our Bongo and we are van virgins. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, we have found a severe corrosion problem underneath which will require lots of work - and money! Our local van restoration garage has asked me if I can tell him what the two pipes underneath the rear heater are for (gas/water, etc), because he will need to remove them to rip out the corroded material that they sit in, before replacing all the sills etc.

Do you know what the pipes contain?

The garage have asked me if I want to remove the rear heater myself before handing the van over for repair work, but I am dreading taking the pipes off if, I'm honest, as I think they will just snap. [-o<

Are there diagrams that show both of these pipes?

Cheers!

There should be a total of 4 pipes!
Two of them are the engine coolant which is used to heat the heating matrix to generate warm/hot air from the rear air-con.
The other two are the refrigerant pipes from the air-con compressor and cool the air circulating thru the air-con in the rear.

Its quite common for the two heating pipes to have been disconnected as they tend to have rust problems and people frequently by-pass the feed to the matrix.

Mechanical diagrams available here choose your year and then start digging down into the sections http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/
