Basically i plan to strap a probe to the top hose..

Could it be done with some of that auto hose repair tape used for emergency hose repair?

I can not see why not but why not use a jubile clip just undo it completly put it around the hose and then fasten it up again with your probe under it.

It's a bit of a bugger to get into (shouldn't be a problem with your girly hands

), but I've done a few now on the metal top hose connection coming out of the drivers side using a jubilee clip & a small ratchet with 7mm socket to tighten the jubilee, gives a good indication of coolant temp. I wouldn't put it on the hose itself, apart from possible chafing, it will have the insulating properties of the hose itself to contend with.

Brilliant! & i have the tools for the job too, including a spare jubilee clip!!

One other question.. The wires from the sensor.. I do plan to route them out the way of any heat source..
Have there been any problems with the wire perishing in the engine bay? Would any sort of automotive electrical conduit compound the problem??

As Kirsty said, try and get it directly onto a metal pipe rather than a hose. WELL worth the effort. The temperature difference is quite a bit.
To get some idea of the difference, run your Bongo up to temperature and then go and 'feel' an adjacent hose and steel pipe. Carefull cos the steel gets much hotter.

Incidentally, I had no problem at all fitting mine - Kirsty did it for me.

I've just run the wire up to where the temp sensor wire is on the standard gauge & cable tied it on there, a bit of protective conduit possibly wouldn't go amiss though if it's small & flexible enough.
No probs with mine as yet, probably been in that position for @2 years or so, I'd hope that the wiring is able to cope with at least the max temp of the gauge/probe.

Think i've found my vocation....

Fitted & working!

Just needs the dewbury to arrive to hold it in the 1 din hole... Currently wedged in with the packing it came in...

... it seems to adjust brightness to the lighting conditions too!

Top metal hose attachment coming off the engine with a jubilee Steve... (But not too tight, don't wanna crush the sensor.?) Haven't had a chance to give the Bongo a bat & run up to temp as yet.. Walk to work..

Should look right when the 626 clock/cubby unit shows up... & a little modding!

Looks a good bit of kit but why so apprehensive of doing what it will do well, looks small enough to fit painlessly into the top hose.
