petrol smell

Post by pantechnicon » Wed May 01, 2013 11:41 am

After an intermittent but strong smell of petrol in my V6 I had the filler neck hose changed which was cracked due to years of being encased in mud. Although this strong smell has now gone there is on occasion a slight whiff of . I have had it rechecked by the garage but they cannot find anything wrong. Any ideas folks ?

Welcome to the forum :). Are you able to pinpoint roughly where the smell is worst? When I remove my filler cap, I get a rush of air out which suggests its under pressure rather than vacuum. A leak somewhere in the vapour control pipework could be the problem. Try taking the cap of after a run & see if you get the same rush of air coming out.

Nothing from ours, however agree with Simon its under pressure!

Might be worth perusing the piping diagrams and looking at the possible joints etc.

Thanks for reply. The few occasions I get the smell it I can smell petrol whilst driving & slight smell by petrol cap. There is a slight rush of air on undoing the cap but will continue to monitor this area as a line of enquiry
over several trips to prove that I am not imagining things & am not totally paranoid !

Cheers for suggestion & link to piping diagram. Will explore the filler cap vacuum idea first as suggested by Simon, & failing that will consider looking at the joints.

Cheers
