the standard temp gauge does not move unless the system is in trouble,it sits at about 11 oclock position, if you have a problem by the time the gauge shows hot its to late.
the causes could be many,but you need to test the system for leaks,are you loosing water,even just a bit per week/month

simon have you any photos of the job bieng done,if not can you do it again with photos.
i have read the factsheet in the members area,and to be honest its a bit vague,shows the bits but not how where etc,looking really for something more than,its a fiddly job,heres the seals.

sounds about right from what ive seen on here.
sorry its ended this way,if they are a bongo aware garage ask them about fittng one of the many temp gauge mods so you can see whats really going on in future,

from my experience if your hoses start to go,this indicates that the stat is not doing its job properly,sorry but just something else to look at.
