How about a rail on the end and the fixing brackets along the side of the table to make an L shape?You could probably use the leg as it is then,might need a cross piece on the bottom of the leg for extra stability though.

I had a Tony Banks exhaust on my diesel Bongo & it sounded a bit more "meaty" but not too load or droning at speed. The nearest thing I could liken it to is a diesel boat engine. I can't say it performed any better than the original but the fact that it didn't look like a rusty dustbi...
