My name is steve i live in wolverhampton w/mids 67 years old semi retired hgv driver mechanic.
I am about to take delivery of a 1996 2.5 tdi manual tin top that hasn.t been used and has not had an mot for 6 years stupid idea YES but very good price and is being driven to me by the owner on trade plates so i must assume not going to fall apart .

Warm welcome to the Forum. 8)

Look forward to hearing how the work goes, and do ask anything you need to know.

Main thing is make sure you understand the need to bleed the cooling system - 3 videos on You Tube.

Welcome to the Bongo family Steve \:D/ , hopefully you have bought a good one but you will almost certainly need some advice and there are lots of knowledgable people on this site......two of them have already welcomed you I see. If you haven't already joined as a member I would urge you to do so as there is absolutely loads of fact sheets and other stuff explaining how to look after your new baby and you also get discount off the price of any thing you buy from the shop. It is well worth the membership fee.
Never run out of road, traction and ideas at the same time.

Welcome Steve and hope you have lots of fun with the Bongo. These days I think a thorough eyes wide open search / assessment of corrosion is at the top of the to-do list. The Bongo is a great design but I recall hearing its design life in Japan was 10 years (they don't keep cars anything like as long as we do I believe, and have a ferocious 'MOT regime'). So with ones like mine being 25rs old (and, as my Bongo specialist points out, with steel half the thickness of that used by equivalent age Toyotas - well something like that anyway!), I've had plenty of welding done and it will never end I think. But, I've had it 15 years and its has never once not started at the turn of a key, or broken down (although having a leisure battery and being diesel helped me make it home despite an alternator failure on the M6 on one occasion!). And if I tot up the cost of bills (it have to have a new head 9 years in) and especially considering I bought it for £3700 and depreciation is negligible, plus all it has done for me, its been my best car by far and has been my only car and commuting vehicle over all those years. But they do need to be a hobby and to have an active interest taken in them, and being checked over regularly to spot and fix stuff (like rust) early and before problems accumulate. Enjoy :-)

The Hamburger (3-layers) menu at the top left is a good way to find your own and new things,

after that you need to choose which area of the forum you want to use by clicking the "Forums" button also top left;

Fuel gauge is common, just run a new earth from the tank to a good point somewhere.

Bongo Spares are good for used parts.

If the sliding door has been opened with the battery disconnected, or completely flat, the lock can get out of sync. Try a 'search' on here for old posts, but a good slap from the inside can clear it.

Could be one of the cold start vacuum valves or even the glowplug relay switching off (think it takes longer than a minute however in this cold weather) they might both cause that sort of effect perhaps ?

Swap no 4 injector with no 1 then you will know if it’s injector or compression

Adding a bit more info took injectors to a diesel repair shop injectors all fine .
I have checked the compression with my tester but my adapters were not big enough so i had to use the push type one so there was some bypass but i managed to get an equal number of 125 psi across all cylinders low i admit but all the same .
I have swapped the injectors round but i
I cant check yet as i broke the leak of pipe
Anyway i still cant get my head around how well it starts and runs till the chuff sound then smoke not black or white not dark blue but light blue then every so often another chuff and a slight miss.
And so it goes on till engine gets warm then runs really well cheers
