Agree. 20% rapeseed oil seemed to give smoother engine and 2mpg or so improvement on a run. I also use a 5W low end engine oil.mikexgough wrote:pretty much the figures I achieve..... if your Bongo is well serviced too it all helps.... I tend to stick to 2250-2500 max .... like the others.... I find a few mpg improvement on 25% Veg Oil...

25% veg oil - I have always been worried about blocking filters or poor performance.
It seems to be sunflower oil in my local supermarket at £1 / litre, do all veg oils work?

56 mph (or 90 kmh) is nothing to do with optimal economy. It is the standard speed at which all vehicle manufacturers quote their fuel consumption figures.snowrat wrote:Is 56mph the optimum on all vehicles, or what is it for the bongo, anyone know?

True, but there may a reason for that, as the Bongo possibly attestsSimon Jones wrote:56 mph (or 90 kmh) is nothing to do with optimal economy. Snowrat you may find sunflower oil is too thick, rapeseed is the best to use.

Re: Fuel Consumption - Optimum Speed
Thanks. I thought I'd read something along those lines somewhere but it's a while since I checked the threads on using veg oil
Re: Fuel Consumption - Optimum Speed
I'm wondering how accurate these really good mpg figures are cos I'm really jealous if they are.
Bongo speedos from what I can gather normally read about 10% high with standard wheels and tyres on so does this mean that the odometer is also 10% over as well which is distorting the figures.
Try as I might, egr disconnected, K & N filter, 17in wheels with 55 profile tyres running at 42psi and keeping it at no more than 60- 65 max on the motorway we get on average 28mpg. I have a Mazda 6 speedo fitted and both the speedo and odometer are just about spot on checking with the GPS. We live in a hilly area and generally when we go away its to another hilly area obviously isn't helping but some of these figures do seem a long way out from what appears to be normal mpg achieved. Are people always waiting and making sure that it is filled to the brim when checking and not just relying on the auto pump stop.

Re: Fuel Consumption - Optimum Speed
My overall average fuel consumption over the last 10 tanks (all brimmed) is 29.79 mpg.... now only 20% of those tanks were a 25% mix of veg oil. Local trips kill fuel consumption,so I tend not to do the odd mile or two and use my bike or find several places to visit on a single trip out.
I was pleased however to hear that a Mercedes M class 4x4 diesel does 18 mpg towing and 23 mpg normally.....
For me a fuel consumption ..... mind to right foot.... steady acceleration not traffic light grand prix stuff helps too and into lock up as soon as you can. Bit harder to do in hilly areas of course.

28 mpg in hilly areas is good for 2wd, excellent for 4WD. I've rarely bettered 30mpg, though I tend to do 65-70mph on motorways. A following wind really makes a difference. My speedo is spot on with 17" wheels.

Ooo you are awful. Have to admit I'm chuckling at that. Is his an LPG V6 so that we're talking about a sort of 40mpg equivalent?rita wrote:perros huevos wrote:at 2250rpm i am chugging along at 80mph & can get 40mpg driving at 70/75 only downside it cost £120 to fill the tank

But there's still the miraculous business of 80mph with only 2250rpm on the rev counter to be explained. Is he using 28" wheels or summat?

Well spotted Simon.Simon Jones wrote:I think the clue is the VW T5 in the avatar picture
We were away with cousins who have a T5 a few weeks ago . Regularly gets 39mpg but he couldn't understand why at every hill we lost him without trying. Then he informed us its 84bhp, sits at 50 on the motorways, no wonder he can't overtake tractors.
I know which I'd sooner have.
