280 miles to tank - about right or low?

What's the MPG like? Can I use chip fat and veggie oil? What about LPG?

LPG is the way to go. The miles per litre will drop but you're only paying around 65p - 75p litre. I get about 400km from a tank of gas which is around 55 litres usable capacity.

Good info, Simon, thanks.

I'm considering LPG, but there aren't too many filling stations close to me, and my daily journey is less than 3 miles, so I doubt I'll be able to switch to LPG on those trips. I just have to work out how much it will really save me.

Yes that is a good point. Mine switches over at 40 degrees which is usually about 2 miles so would not give you any benefit for short journeys. The usual guidelines are somewhere between 15,000 to 18,000 miles to break even. I'm barely half way after two years.
