Basic MPG stats ?

Basic MPG stats ?
I am still in the research stage of my Bongo
I wonder if a few of you would give me some some honest MPG stats
I don't own a bongo yet - but was thinking petrol would be best - and maybe an LPG conversion
but any stats here welcome....
Also if you have time what would you think a 240 mile round trip would cost in fuel ?

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
OK this is for my V6 since we owned it, we use it as our every day vehicle so during the winter the mpg is a lot worse than the summer months;

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
I can only speak diesel here and am a bit of an efficiency nut. The best I have achieved on a long run with a double dose Millers diesel additive is 39 MPG. I anticipate that when driving at between 50 and 55mph on long journeys these days. At 65mph or above I would expect 30 MPG.
Around town I would expect 20MPG.
A 240 mile journey would cost roughly £45.00 if done at circa 55mph.
I understand why the quieter smoother petrol is desirable but it is going to cost more either in petrol overall or for quite a while paying back the LPG conversion install costs.
The good news is either way you will have a very good vehicle. Bongo's are great in my book.

2nd that - those are good ball park figures for a 2wd diesel I reckon, though I get more like 22mpg around town. Subtract 2mpg for a 4wd diesel.BongoBongo123 wrote:I can only speak diesel here and am a bit of an efficiency nut. Re: Basic MPG stats ?
Run a Bongo on 50/50 diesel and veg oil and you can get an "effective" MPG of around 40mpg based on a real MPG of around 30.
On a run I get about 7 miles per litre if half those litres are at 80p/litre (current price of my veg oil) and the other half at 120p/litre that gives an average of £1.00/litre.
240/7 = 35(ish) litres x £1.00 = £35.00 for 240 miles or 14.28p/mile.
That's my answer.
PS Compared to all the other costs of ownership fuel isn't actually all that significant - it's just that it's the one you notice most.

That last point is hugely important and central to my bongo owning philosophy.scanner wrote:Run a Bongo on 50/50 diesel and veg oil and you can get an "effective" MPG of around 40mpg based on a real MPG of around 30.

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
I have had an unconverted 2002 2L petrol Bongo for 7 months.
I have averaged 26.8 MPG over that period. The best figue I have achieved from a tankful of fuel is 30.7 MPG.
Not great fuel efficiency but what fun!!

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
4x4 diesel
Just towed 1 1/2 tons of caravan to the coast this weekend
And got 21 mpg checked by brimming tank
On average I get 30 mpg
Did get stuck behind a asda lorry doing 40 on the way back for miles
And not checked but that was doing some good mpg then as was sitting at 150 revs could only just get it into top gear
Fuel gauge hardly moved

That's some gearing - what size wheels have you got?

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
My V6 with LPG averages around 19 MPG but gas is close to half the price of petrol so in cost terms it's around 35 MPG equivalent.
Re: Basic MPG stats ?
Ive owned 3 Bongos since 2006,2 deisels, and the last one a 2l petrol, since 2010.
I must be an anorak,as i brim them at every fill up and work out the mpg.
Th 2l petrol does 18-19 mpg running around town, and 28-32 on a run, depending how much is motorway. In summer months the town use increases by 2-3 mpg
Having said this ,I didnt buy them for their economy

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
I've had all types of Bongos (except an LPG conversion) and I would offer
Diesel: 22 mpg around town, 32 mpg at a steady 65 mph
V6 Petrol: 16/30
2.0 litre petrol: 19/34

V6 Petrol: 16/30
2.0 litre petrol: 19/34

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
Diesel. Best ever for a trip was 29mpg - very careful A road driving plus 50mph motorway. Normally around 26/27 mpg. Motorway speeds at 55-60. Short trips in low 20's.
Mine seems lower than many of the above in spite of some careful driving. I would offer up that "good" mpg comes with a fair amount of diligent maintenance over and above the standard service. Everything from tyres, engines and exhausts can make a difference. I'm hoping for better as mine is now running smoothrr after some new seals and gaskets and I now have the right sized tyres on!!

Re: Basic MPG stats ?
Apparent MPG also depends on your odometer recording correctly have you checked that against the distance posts on a motorway?
It may just be that it is underreading the distance.

10 kms = 6.213 miles
