Re: Update September meet Scotland
So are they saying that you can only go to the top with a guide, you can't just wander up there at your own pace?
Maybe they don't want people drifting around up there like nomads

I think the guided tour is the only way you can walk to the top from the top funicular station out of season. However you can walk to the top from the car park which is what I did when I was 6 years old.
I swore that one day I would go back and do the trip on the chair lift, which we did one Spring holiday weekend with our children. We had a snowball fight before being told that if we wanted to go back down in the chair we had to go there and then as the weather was worsening. The children were given black bin bags to sit in to keep them dry! Fun times!

We walked from the carpark. I didn't know there were guided tours from the station, but did know you couldn't get the train up and head out on your own.
The walk from the railway station as it is the most boring bit of the climb and, in my opinion, a travesty. I'd only do that as the start of a longer walk.
I'd like to get to know those hills better - they are so different from those at Glencoe.

A lot flatter, you could play football on top of most of them. This is why they are so dangerous in a winter white out, few landmarks to guide you so you have to be good at using maps & a compass ( sat nav I guess these days).

I'm working all weekend guys but may try to pop down on the Sunday morning.
The Braemar Gathering is on the Saturday if that interests anyone. It's a good hour and a half to two hour drive from the campsite though. It may be a good day out far any royalists.
The Glenfiddich Distillery do free tours and tastings for those whisky fans. It's about 40 miles drive from the campsite and would take 50 minutes to drive. The Macallan distillery is near to the Glenfiddich distillery.
There is also steam train which runs from Aviemore to Spean Bridge and there is also the Highland wildlife centre as well as lots and lots of great walks, lowland and up the hills.
Hope you all have a great trip!

Re: Update September meet Scotland
Unless u get there very very early and are prepared to park in a dubby field and be surrounded by 30,000 tourists I'd be avoiding Betty! Oh and she usually arrives around 3pm or there abouts from recollection and all traffic stops while she is on route..co.uk wrote:

She'll only be wearing a peach twin set anyway

Tell me about it. I've got to work there every year. Some people like all that touristy stuff, especially the tourists!

I've had the joys of doing point duty on and off since 1995 so thank god I don't do that now! Sausage softies at the early morning briefing were fine though and the overtime

Tony, please don't put ideas into Thomas' head
We did the steam railway dining a couple of years ago and can recommend it.
