nearside wing mirror - does it retract or not?

Post by Rodgers123 » Wed Oct 12, 2011 9:49 pm

I think my nearside wing mirror is broken as only the offside wing mirror retracts when the switch is engaged. surely it would make more sense for the passenger mirror to retract.
Also the nearside mirror won't stay in position and so probably incurred an impact in the past.
I note that there are two parts for the wing mirror and so which bit do I need to replace the base of mirror assembley. The actual mirror glass still can be electrically controlled by the joystick controller.

Your advice much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi, and welcome.

Both mirrors should go in and out together.

Try pulling the NS mirror forward (ie the wrong way) hopefully it'll trigger the motor back into synch & all will be ok, as Bob says, it should work with the OS mirror folding action. If that doesn't work, it may need surgery/replacement. The bottom part is just a cover, there aren't really 2 parts, the motor is inside the mirror. You may also have an issue with the wiring between body & door.

Awesome.

Thanks for your fast reply.
Much appreciated.
I now need to work out how to dismantle it to check out where the problem is.
The mirror is loose in the sense that I can retract it and extend and thus the reason why it moves when in transit which makes it pretty useless.

Does it make any noise or attempt to move when you press the button?
As I said, before dismantling try pushing it forwards the wrong way.....

Hi

When I deploy the retract switch, there is no mechanical or electrical noise from the passenger side wing mirror and so does this indicate an electrical fault?
I have tried as you suggest to push the mirror forward and back but nothing seems to be having any effect or giving me a clue as the fault.
Is there any fact sheet about how to dismantle the wing mirror.ie do I have to access it via door panel or does the black shroud (base) of the wing mirror prise off from the outside?

To access the internals the mirror pulls off the mounting by prising it from the outer bottom corner, it' is clipped on by 4 clips which should pop off. To remove the mirror, from memory, there's a removable disc jobby in the inner door panel , with a fixing behind I think, can't remember if there's any fixings under the lower plastic cover, it should just clip off I think. ( try doing a forum search on "mirror and removal" or similar)
As yours is making no noise or attempt, I'd be looking at the wiring between the drivers door & body first to check it's not a broken wiring issue there, may look ok from the outside, but due to the position of the clip, it fatigues the wires.

Also check the wire loom between the passenger (nearside) door and the body.
