Well that has to be the definitive response! No doubt about the winter use. According to radio 4 the first part of this winter will be mild and the second part bitterly cold. Just as well I've got the button.......

right, so now we know it IS an exhaust valve - how does it work?

Does it just block the exhaust off slightly, increasing back pressure and making the engine work harder (doesn't sound very nice!) or does it re-route the exhaust gas around the engine somewhere in a heat-transfer method?

There's an awful lot of use for exhaust gas on these Bongos...

hmmm... would that contribute to piston blowby on older engines then?

sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to fully understand this feature now before I (possibly) start using it over winter!

I doubt if you'll need it. It's only for use when the temp reaches minus 10 centigrade.

Just received a english version of the manual for a mazda bongo through ebay...at a rather inflated price of ?22...A new Zealand company has translated it...Im sure its not full dealer eaxct translation but gives the basics and service intervals...

The swich reads as follows,

Advantage of carrying the warm up operation is to shortern the warming up time in cold weather and to operate heating system efficiently.

1, start engine.
2. press the switch to operate the warm up and the display light will appear.
3. press the bottom half of the switch to turn off the the warm up system..

Advice.depressing hte accelerator when the warm up system is in operation will cease the system temporarily. Realease the accelerator to operatethe system again.... :)
