Partial oil change

Post by Stevievee » Sat Jan 04, 2020 12:11 pm

Hi all,
Quick question, is it worth doing a partial oil change between annual services, using a pela pump? I have a 2.0ltr Diesel.
I am not very practical, but think this would be easy enough, if beneficial?
Thanks
Steve

The service schedule is full service at 1 year/6000 miles with an oil change at 6 months/3000 miles, whichever is first.

The 'First' bit is important.

So yes, I would recommend an intermediate oil change, not 'partial', although it's not necessary to change the filter during the intermediate one.

The main risk is to the turbo if you don't bother with oil changes on time. '

Will a pela bump not extract enough oil?

The secret is to empty it once it's full, then suck out the rest.

You must have the oil up to temperature before attempting to use the Pela, a quick spin round the block won't do it. 8)

No risk of it melting the plastic pipe then?

The Pela pump is a pain in the a###, simply remove the sump plug and drain oil into container, I would advise you change the oil filter whenever you change the oil ,you need to remember these old vehicle need every help they can get, as said it would benefit the oil cooler jets and turbo .

Oil and filter change is the best thing for any engine- keeps them happy. Plus, whilst you are lying on your back watching the old oil drain out, you can look at all the other ‘little’ jobs that no doubt need doing

I've used a Pela to do complete oil changes on my Bongo for 13 years. I tried it after the pain in the arse experience of doing it via the sump plug. The Pela makes the job a breeze, removes all oil, removes the risk of mess and spillage from spurting sump plugs, removes the need for my ageing frame to be in harms way, removes the risk of oil on clothing etc. In fact the only thing that no longer needs removing is the sump plug. And my Bongo continues to run fine. As Bob advises, warm the engine so oil viscosity lowered and pump sucks it up easily. The one caveat is to insert the probe carefully so you feel it touch sump bottom. Push it in too far and it can snag. But its never happened to me.

P.S. i change my filter every other oil change (as recomnended I think but...). No problems yet. Rust, on the other hand, is another matter!

I'm with Mike on this one, Pela all the way. 63 oil changes & 32 filters and counting, still pulling like a train with 400,000+ on the clock.

Just checked on the fact sheet, says 6l of oil from empty. How much should I expect to get out with a pump? Nearly all of that? Thanks
