Main beam not working and lights go off

Post by Alcol » Thu May 21, 2020 12:35 pm

Bongo has just failed the MOT on the main beam.
When you operate the stalk to flash the main beam they work fine.
If you operate the stalk to put the main beam full on the one headlight goes off !

Has anyone else had this?
Is there a relay for the main beam circuit?

Thanks Alan

Depends on age of the vehicle, the early ones don't use a relay and the lights are driven direct from the contacts both for Flash and beams.
After 1997/9 then a relay was put in to handle main beams but the Flash is still direct from the switch itself.
1995-1997

1997-onwards

It’s a 1995 if that helps.
If there are no relays is it most likely the stalk needs replacing?

Before replacing the stalk, a much more expensive item, do just check the lamp connectors and the earth connection down to the chassis, they are known for over heating and causing problems, its a faint possibility that it might be the connecting blocks, if so then better quality ceramic ones can be bought on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-H4-Ceram ... 4103097915

Geoff, you were spot on.
It was a bad connection on the back of the headlights.
Thanks Alan
