I am gong to remove the cylinder head, diesel repair shop say cant be the pump as it is a rotary type and do not create this type of problem they either work or don't basically .So i am going down the road of a mechanical problem ie valve / cracked head but dubious as compression test was good but who knows what i will find pot of gold may be

Easy tiger you’re leaping straight in to the deep end if it’s cheap parts wise to try another pump to be sure of problem why not try it I have a pump that was perfectly ok for the cost of postage and a beer I would happily mail it to you. Also is there any difference compression wise between hot and cold

Also these pumps are responsible for the injection timing so they are reasonably complex to the point where they could be party to the problem unlike the common rail rotary pumps which purely just supply pressure

Only checked compression cold
I have started to take it apart and i think someone has been ! tatting ! for want of a better word bolts not tight new jubilee clips and hoses easy to remove mainly things you would expect to be tight or seized if you know what i mean cheers.

Well engine back together but still not running rite i think i have a timing issue as when i rev there is a rattle at top end but not on tick over its mainly from the front cylinder no1 definitely worse starts first time. All injectors and pump tested ok
So do you think it could be timing one tooth out or valve adjustment .

i have fitted a new belt / head skimmed tested / good compression / pump /injectors refurbished ect this why i suspect either valve clearance / or timing is out as it does sound like a detonation problem like a skeleton rattling in a tin can so to speak :). The higher the revs the louder it gets.

Would be worth checking valve clearances again now you’ve run it up don’t know if there’s a hot gap setting or if it’s just from cold. From memory doing old ford engines those lock nut adjusters are a pain would have thought they would be hydraulic very primitive

I agree going to check valve clearances but go to check what the clearances are when weather picks up and re check timing but i am lead to believe you have use a dial gauge to do it properly cheers
