Aircon pipe sizes ?

Post by g8dhe » Wed Jul 28, 2021 4:05 pm

Does anybody know how to identify which aircon systems need the full 950g fill as against the 700g fill for the later versions with smaller pipes ?
Is it simply a date - if so what date ?
Pipe diameter - do we know what the sizes are ?
or any other method ?

Yes there are some images and dimensions of the seals but there not visible in a working system :-(
There doesn't appear to be a definitive measurement that can be taken at present, I'll do some more studying of the parts diagrams and see if I can locate any images by part number.

Geoff, I've got info on this. What's your chassis number?

Its SG5W-500904
Started looking in detail at the mech parts diagrams and it seems there are a whole series of different parts used by model and date for the various pipes :-(

The dimensions of the O rings will give you the diameter of the pipes. A full set of O rings for your particular model consists of

5 x S31P61J17
6 x S24A61J17
4 x S33P61J17

I'd send you a set to measure but I'm out of stock on the S33s.

Assuming you've not had the rear system removed I reckon it wil take 950g of gas. But if the rear system is blanked off then 700g.

Thanks Ian, I don't need any new seals, the system seems to be holding OK, but KwickFits machine broke down after filling it with only 700g of refrigerant (so no charge), but it suddenly came to my mind that maybe it was a later version and not the older type! However whilst its cooling its not the same low temperature I had in the old van, so once they have the machine working again and I can get down there I'll have the full 950g (both parts working fine) and will then get to pay them as well ;-)

The nearest guidelines we have are
Front aircon only: 700gm gas + 14ml PAG.
Front and rear aircon: 950gm gas + 14ml PAG.
Year 2000 onwards: 750gm gas + 50 PAG.

Yes that's why I'm thinking mine might be only 750g + 50pag as its December 2001 off the production line, it would just be nice to make an easy measure of one of the pipes that are easy to reach and know for sure. Infact I will do that now and post my measurements and see if anyone can do similar for a pre-1999 model and we can see if we can find an easy way of making the decision!

Right here we go this is for;
Body number SG5W-500904 Date of issue 12/21/2001
IMG_20210801_095051.jpg
So that is 11.85mm outside diameter for the pipe feeding the "H" high pressure fill valve.
The pipe from the top of the drier tank is 8.32mm outside diameter.

Hi Geoff. Sorry, not at work today so can't check.
We just thought we'd mention this.
As you know, the generalised date for the pipe size chage is 2000 onwards. But we've seen the narrower pipes on a 1998 V6, so the date is a general guide. The pipes are not changed often enough to be able to compare and to know the date for sure.

Sometimes there's a plate that shows the amounts needed. It's usually on the the slam panel by the passenger side headlight or on the bonnet by the battery stickers. Unfortunately it's not on all Bongos! Here's an old photo of one.

Thanks Doone, yes I've had a cursory look for a label nothing visible but to be fair its usually when I've been doing some additional wiring, so may have a more detailed check in a bit. It looks like who ever did the undersealing also decided to spray a lot of bits under the bonnet as a lot of the pipes etc are covered in the black layer which is a little annoying!
Yes like many things on Bongo's changes seemed to have occured over a spread of time, maybe individual production lines within the factory, or they have a totally different approach to supply line changes!
