error code 38...any advice please...

Post by rongo » Sat Sep 18, 2021 11:12 am

Hi all,

I have an error code 38, found that error in 2019…as the bongo running fine except that sometimes it doesn’t start on P position (Parking),
it starts on N position (Neutral).

I couldn’t find what the error code was…

I bought a Gearbox Inhibitor Switch in 2019 as I made some research, and the problem was that for not starting on P position…
didn’t went around to fit it…
(does anyone changed the gearbox inhibitor switch...how difficult is to change it?)

Any idea about this error code 38 is?

Its not listed on the 2-gigit codes but a web search gives;
"Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor"
Which usually relates to the 4-wire O2 detector in the exhaust pipe, where the heater circuit has failed.
However the mechanical diagrams for a 1996 diesel doesn't show one being present!

Hi,

Thanks, g8dhe for your reply…

I had this fault since 2019, I have had researched it for a while about this error but could not find anything as well…
Could you please confirm for me that the error is 38? I have added a video link for it…
But i don’t want to give up, I love challenges but that really puzzled me…
If I cannot find it or fix it, I may have to bring it to the specialist …

Last year I have changed the follow, thinking that could cure the problem…

Try a Google search https://www.google.com/search?q=mazda+error+code+p0038

Do you have a sensor in the exhaust system thought they were only in petrol engines but ...... see here https://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum ... 83#p589183

hi g8dhe,

Thanks for the reply,
I have driven my bongo for a week to clear the ecu as advised…
About the sensor in the exhaust system, I need to double check…
as far as I remember I never seen it while fixing or changing the exhaust …
I will have a look this week…
