Freecamping in The Lake District

Post by Blueskai » Mon Aug 01, 2011 10:44 pm

Are there any free camping opportunities around Windermere? I've never been and rarely free-camp
We are heading up to Edinburgh and fancy finding a quiet stopover en route.

Is it OK to put the roof up in a quiet lay-by?

Yours cluelessly

I don't know about the Lake District but if you take the A7 from Carlisle to Edinburgh there are a few set back lay-byes on the route where the big lorrys spend the night.

There is a good site just along the road too at Chapel Stile, just a field with a checker plate toilet block. Quite cheap too.

Most of the obvious places round that way have large No Overnight Parking signs & are fairly well policed but where there's a will . . . .

Keswick rugby club car park, there is an overspill one up the lane that takes to to the C&C site. Vans are allowed, I stayed there a few weeks ago, if you arrive early in the day it may cost you about 3 quid to park, otherwise I think after 6-7pm its free til 9am. Make sure you have a couple of pints in the clubhouse and support them in some way!

Hi

if you join the http://www.wildcamping.co.uk

after paying the joining membership fee

you have access to the data base of wild camping pitches. Just need to keep to the rules, leave no trace and do not upset the locals

hope that helps you.

Oh if you find any pitches all the ask is that you share them with the members to keep the whole thing going

david.

Thankyou for the advice.

I've changed my plans slightly. I am now going to stay two nights at Fell End campsite on Friday and Saturday night.. It was £19 per night for a family of 4 on a 24" pitch. That's pretty good, I think.

Thanks again.
