We have stayed at both, both are the normal standard, Canterbury is ideal for covering the whole of Kent as your never more than an average of 30 minutes, worse an hours drive to anywhere in the county, also the takeaways deliver to site ;-) Folkestone has great views of the Channel and over to the French Coast on clear days, very busy constant change of people and vehicles as its the first/last stop for the Ferry for many people!
Here are a few locations we visited http://www.360cities.net/search/kent-uk or look on the Map however http://www.360cities.net/map#lat=51.219 ... 01&zoom=10

I have camped at Folkstone racecourse on a couple of occasions.

Found it clean and available witthout booking BUT that was not when the racing was on. Handy as a one night stand waiting for the ferry!.

There are two blocks, the older one in the middle of the site appears to be solar operated for a lot of its power. Its is an older block, so the showers are a little on the small side and being solar powered a little on the cooler side. The other nearer the entrance, is better being a little more modern, and has a better supply of hot water. Both had normal levels of cleanliness, I did notice that there was a whiff of sewers in the older one, but only on two occasions and not that strong, we were down there end of Sept early October last year.
