Wild camping website?

Post by Klikchik » Thu May 03, 2012 10:52 pm

I was over on the west coast of scotland last year and a fellow camper told me about a website on wild camping locations.

For the life of me, I can't remember it and its driving me nuts! Ive searched and searched but no luck.

It was done by one guy I think and you could actually use a link for each spot to use google to look at it. There were hundreds of locations and I remember thinking how brilliant it was.

Any ideas folks?

http://www.motorhomeparking.co.uk/

http://rutgerbooy.nl/Wildcamping.htm

:)

Edit: Have a look on O/S and road maps for out of the way parking and picnic sites, Google Earth it and Hey Presto...

Done this a few times and always come up trumps. Worth having a back up just in case, but it does work well.

Also look in the Member's Area for peeps happy to let you stop on the drive for a night or two.

The Rutger Booys site is almost dead now as he doesn't support it any more.

The main site is probably this one http://www.wildcamping.co.uk/

and there is a big wild camping contingent who regularly post on www.motorhomefacts.co.uk

I think wild camping is being clamped down on more and more on the Western Isles - you can no longer camp by the beach airport on Barra and do not try camping on the machair ANYWHERE on the islands it is guaranteed to put backs up and increase the opposition to motorhomes that is building up in some places.

You have highlighted the problem here Scanner.

People post a good spot to stay over and it gets overrun, the minority abusing it an upsetting local people. Leaving litter, emptying Portapottis down public loos, staying for a week and more while never using a local shop, PO, pub...

That's the joy of finding your own spot for a night and moving on.

Thanks for the links folks. One responsible wild camping bongo owner here, just so chuffed to have a camper now instead of a tent!!!

All packed (took me two days!) and off to the Outer Hebrides we go!
