Confirmation of HiD bulb type please...
Hi,
I have factory HiD lights (2001 Aero)
Can someone confirm what bulb type they are. Are they H7's or some thing else?
The fog lights I think are H3's but if some can confirm this for me. Thanks.
Got my mot on Thursday and totally forgot the headlights are different colours so better do something about it!
Thanks again
Regards
Terry

Can't help with the bulb type I'm afraid but I hope you get it through OK now that the new MOT rules have come in.
These require HID lamps to have self levelling which as far as I'm aware the Bongo doesn't have. Let us know how you get on as it seems most late Bongos have HID lamps.

These have so far passed with no advisories: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 15#p534783briwy wrote:Can't help with the bulb type I'm afraid but I hope you get it through OK now that the new MOT rules have come in.

The new regs are intended to deal with the yoofs who install badly made / fitted units to their boy racer cars. There should be no issue for OEM systems installed at the time of production.
Anyway, lets not hijack the thread

Cant remember, but they're definitley HOY H7's they're a jap spec and you can get em off fleabay quite cheap. If they're the original type then they're NOT H4's they look like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-6-ESTAT ... 255978626f
or at least have that connector on the rear,Pull yours out and you'll see.
And earlier models do use H3's for lower spots , so assumedly (hopefully) aero's are the same

So what happens when there's a couple of fatties in the back or your towing a caravan/trailer with the HIDs on then Simon? I take the new MOT regs to mean ALL vehicles with HID have to have a self levelling device - which has implications for importers bringing in new vehicles to the UK.Simon Jones wrote:These have so far passed with no advisories: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 15#p534783briwy wrote:Can't help with the bulb type I'm afraid but I hope you get it through OK now that the new MOT rules have come in.

Re: Conformation of HiD bulb type please...
My Bongo passed its MOT last week. The tester put on an advisory that the front side lights were slightly discoloured (ie a tad blue) but let me through. If someone's comments that they will let you off for the time being on the new items are true then I had better change the bulbs for pure white ones for next time round.
While my 2002 Jeep Liberty (Cherokee 2.5CRD) passed with no advisories two days before. I am not sure what type of headlamps it has fitted but suspect that they are normal lamps. It does not have headlamp wipers or as far as I am aware a self leveling system but it does have a two position headlight switch to adjust the headlamp level to the load being carried. Could this be why it passed and if so could this system be aftermarket fitted to later Bongos?

Re: Conformation of HiD bulb type please...
It's got an electronic adjustment of the dash board to raise and lower the beam (as per most modern cars). It's not automatic levelling as fitted to some vehicles, so not what I would term as 'self-levelling' but so it does allow for the caravan towing fattiesdandywarhol wrote:So what happens when there's a couple of fatties in the back or your towing a caravan/trailer with the HIDs on then Simon? Thanks Simon, didn't know that - at least you have the facility to lower them if oncoming traffic flashes you.
I'm sure you could mount a potentiometer gizmo between the rear axle and body to send a signal to the lamp motors

Yeah...
I can confirm, mine, has the electric up and down facility...... and gods own automatic wash facilities.... road spray! Don't think that should be a problem. It's just I've noticed when I am up behind another vehicle you can see the different colours of the bulbs...... by the time the light hits the floor it don't look alot different? not sure how the mot see that?
Thanks for you replies so far...... although not conclusive yet it's better than my first response from a local mazda dealer...." Mazda Bongo's don't have HiD lights as standard"!...... oh dear?
I've got to quote the chassis no to them.
I'll keep trying ..........
Regards
Terry

When I get home tonight, I'll whip the headlamp off and take a look at the bulb for you. There is bound to be a part number on it somewhere.

Re: Confirmation of HiD bulb type please...
Ok, removed headlamp out and took a pile of photos in the process, but not got time to upload them at the mo. I'll stick all the info in a fact sheet over the next few days. Complete set of bulbs as follows:
- Dipped beam: type D2R 35W 85V, make Osram Xenarc (HiD) 66050
- Main beam: type HB3 60W, make Sylvania
- Indicator: type 203, 21W amber
- Side light: type 204 5W clear
In terms of changing the the HiD lamp, it's going to be easier to remove the whole unit (3 bolts) having removed the grille (1 screw and 4 clips to release), but it is a bit fiddly as the ballast is mounted on the underside. The great thing about the Aero front end is much roomier to work on as it doesn't have the metal panel above the bumper.
Available here for £45 each, but they should be changed in pairs: https://www.xenonmaster.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=5

Re: Confirmation of HiD bulb type please...
Excellent...... Thanks for this.
The MoT is today!, so I'll see what they say first..... £90 +.... wow....
Got to be done if necassary....
I will have difficulty in removing the front end.... When my car had it's front bumper replaced it looks like the gorillas just pulled the front end off and broke most of the clips. On re assembly they used GLUE / SEALANT to secure each point. I will have to cut it off and reseal when putting back together!!!! Grrrr
I can get over that one....
Thanks again

Re: Confirmation of HiD bulb type please...
It's not impossible to get the rear covers off, ping the metal clip down & withdraw the lamp, but as you can see here, it's a long bulb & the wiring is quite tight. Passenger side would be easier to do insitu I think even with a leisure battery. If it'a any consolation, I broke two of the clips removing the grille last night, so it's easily done especially when the plastic is cold. Good luck with MOT.
