it's been suggested that a faulty sensor could be causing the ABS warning light to illuminate. how do I get them off and check. what do they look like etc. any tips greatly appreciated folks

They can be tested in-situ and in fact if you remove them, you will no longer have the reluctor ring to generate a signal so they cannot be tested. The sensors themselves are apparently very difficult to get out without damaging them, so the options are to fit new (expensive) or replace the whole hub with a second hand unit.

If you get the fault codes read correctly you may be able to identify which one is at fault, although I'd start with a visual inspection first to check for split rings or damaged/loose wiring.

There are other causes of ABS light errors so may be worth ruling out those first.

brake light bulb failure, or fitting LED replacement type bulbs can also cause the ABS fault light to come on.

Thanks for your help Simon but What Am I looking for. Sensor on each wheel?

I had problems with mine .. You can check the resistance of each sensor .. the front ones are connected in the engine bay on the N/S by the ABS pump .. the rear connections are clipped inside the cills .. I was lucky that it was a poor connection in a multi pin connector ..

It is worth while unplugging each one .. make sure the connectors are clean / bright and tight .. give a spray of WD40 then plug back together with a dab of Vaseline ..
