Crazy's Bongo not reversing

Post by missfixit70 » Fri Mar 06, 2009 11:35 am

Just had a call from Crazy who's nowhere near a computer at the mo, his better half, Kerry went to reverse the Bongo this morning & it wouldn't go at all, all other gears are ok. First thoughts are ATF level, which Crazy's on his way to check.
Any other suggestions?

Hiya Kirsty,
Mine did this once recently....I expected the worst..but all it turned out to be was the silver nut on the back of the gear shifter had come loose. Its the nut that holds the gearshift cable to the stick. After a bit iof trial & error adjustment it all worked fine. I think the nut wasn't done up properly when we changed the cam belt?
Hope this helps
Spencer

Apparantly it has now been carted off to Gerry at Discount Trucks as it was due for a service there next week anyway. It was trying to creep backwards at 4000rpm, Dunnnings Auto's reckoned that probably meant the clutch pack was on it's way.
That's the second one that was at the Wookey Hole meet that's died, BongoLouis had a hose go & possible head/gasket gone - Could it be The Curse Of The Wookey Witch? 8-[

#-o Cheers for the assistance Kirsty, John you need to read more books on auto boxes
and Spencer I will check what you said but surely it wouldn't just effect the reverse gear, did it?
Anyways Thunderbird 3 came to the rescue and off to the doctor Gerry at discount trucks she's trundled :?

Sounds like a rear clutch pack problem or a fluid problem relating to the operation of the rear clutch

Hi...when mine played up I was still able to drive in forward gears...but the cable (due to the nut) wouldn't allow full engagement of the reverse position. I hope yours is as simple.Fingers crossed for you, [-o<

As I am also unable to reverse at the moment may I ask how much it cost for the gearbox replacement so I know whether to go and crack open a new bottle of JD

Thanks

 You may want to open that bottle or not
Now it's a bit like this, I rang around several auto gearbox specialists and the going rate seemed to be about £600 for dropping the gearbox out renewing the reverse clutch pack and then refitting, but as I was due a service it was booked in with Gerry the following week anyway, so I looked around for a replacement box £160 got it dropped to Gerry he did the full service including rear brake pads which it required, fit the replacement box and charged me £350 total. Personally I was very happy with that and still have my old box which I can get reconditioned at my leisure :D
Having said all that, I have, since buying my Bongo from Gerry over 4 years ago,
used him for all my servicing MOT's so perhaps he looks after me reasonably well bless him =D>
cheers! party on dudes.
