which oil 10w 30 or 10w 40 or 15w 40

as the title says,,, which one?

my Q8 oil guy can only get me 10w 30 in 208 ltr barrels lol a little too much :lol:

he can get me 10w 40 in smaller drums

or do i get the normal 15w 40

need a quick responce on what others put in or dont you go into it that deep and just let the garage put whatever in ??

got 96,000 kms on clock

I used 10/40 last change same as Max.

10/30 is the 'recommended' viscosity, but 10/40 should be perfectly ok.

Imo, 15/40 is a tad too thick, and I'd personally avoid using it (unless your engine is particularly high mileage?).

Use a decent quality oil designed for turbo'd diesels.

I can get Millers high-synth Turbo-Diesel oil from my local Factors for around £17/5L which strikes me as being pretty darn good. No point using 'cheap' stuff at that price...

told him 7 ltrs

Q8 is kuwait petroleum

they refine for other so called companies that put their label on it

I thought I read it was 5W/30 somewhere?
I think this is what I use, scanner as I do a lot of short runs and prefer to know that oil is flowing freely around the system ASAP.

I'm on 5w 30 too, a decision that was reached after reading up on here, factsheets & other sources, but don't ask me to explain, as I'm b***ered if I can remember why :wink:

im running 5 30, i found that the fuel comsumption went up when i ran a thicker oil, that was when we first got the bongo and i was monitoring the fuel costs.

Clearly the Bongo is a tolerant beast!

5W 30 is pretty thin, and would be ideal for colder climes and, I guess, short runs as mentioned above. Has anyone using this grade noticed if the oil consumption has gone up?

I'd be very surprised indeed if using 10W 30 or 40 oil caused a significant increase in fuel consumption over 5W.

For normal driving and/or motorway runs, I'd rather stick with 10W.

You need to understand what those numbers mean.

The 5 or 10 does not apply when warmed up as that is the cold viscosity and thus shows how the oil performs when cold.

The 30 or 40 is the hot viscosity and shows how the oil performs when at working temperature - therefore a 5W/30 and a 10W/30 will both have the same viscosity in "normal driving and/or motorway runs" but a 5W/40 or 10W/40 would be "thicker" then.

The 5W will (as Mike says) impart less drag on the engine (and thus help make starting easier from cold) and circulate quicker after a cold start and thus protect the engine sooner.

You never "drive" on a 5W or 10W oil only start on it.
You "drive" on the 30 or 40 bit.

can you get 5w 40 oil and if so would it be a better chose.
