rustmaster - to 6 years of rust free bongo'ing

Post by triathlondave » Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:59 pm

Hi everyone just got back today from Rustmaster.

Bongo now all black and coated underneath.

Big thanks to rustmaster first class service.
Tea and coffee great too.

Next job on van back to Bongo mania in Hucknull for a few teething problems, (what second hand car don't have them eh?)

Then bike rack and temp alarm.

Can't recomend them enough. (hope rust monster stays away)
Also got my discount for being a bongo fury member, what with my discount on my insurance certainly a good decision to join you bongoliers

David.

David

Did they spray inside the arches by taking out the gubbins trays in the rear side panels? This allows you to get at the cavity above the arch. We've owned our bongo for nearly 5 years and ours have just pinholed on the N/S rear.

Interesting you should say that. I have similar. Just a couple of v. tiny bubbles of 'sweating' rust in one place on the o/s wing - seems v. solid still. I removed gubbins boxes and although Chassis Clean (who did mine) have clearly waxoyled thorougly, I can see how it must be v. difficult to get the waxoyl to wick properly into the seam between inner and outer wing, especially where it is blind, and I think this is where my one little patch may be stemming from. I also have (but this is from when I bought the Bongo, another small area on n/s arch right at the front where it meets the cill. I treat it with Kurust etc. and it doesn't appear to have got any worse over 3 years. It was caused by the inner/outer wings seams having a gap between them. I've since closed that (Kurusted, then Sikaflex sealant, then g-clamped so metal joined properly) and sealed it and I think thats stopped that one.

Yesterday I took the gubbins boxes out and using a straw on the end of a bottle that I'd put Kurust in, I had a good go at dribbling Kurust down intto the seam gap in the hope it would wick in as well as run along the seam and stop any rusting. I've also carefully pricked the tiny paint bubbles and brushed Kurust over those to - hopefully - stop any more action. Today, I'm going to do the same thing with a spray can of Waxoyl and one of those WD40 type straws on the end.

We are lucky in that Chassis Clean at Rostherne are near for us and excellent (I got mine done there). I think they are now £450, but its a quality job. If you are thinking of getting it done, drop by and I'll show you over mine and give you my thoughts on areas to make sure they give special attention to.

Hi Mike

Hope all is well, ours started out as bubbles about a month after I had the darn thing sprayed

They will get worse, I used dinitrol to spray mine - did it a few years back following a tip from Dandy.

It's due for MOT and Service in the new year so I might ask Ian Taylor for a price to fix it.

We are currently assessing the benefit of bongoing after the cost of the cylinder head/price of diesel etc.

Regards

Graham

Yes, with recent costs I can see you might want to schedule a review. I think about these things then ask myself what else could match what it does (plus give me as much pleasure - I'm entitled to a BIT of that. Whilst the Bongo is proving so cheap on bills, cheap on capital outlay etc. its hard to think of a suitable alternative - everything else is so........dull!

I reckon it turns a lot on (1) how much you are going to use it for what it does best esp. the camping thing and (2) how much mileage are you obliged to do in it (commuting etc) and how much is discretionary/pleasure.

What might you get instead?

Good luck making the choices - hope you stay with us 8)

The theory was to keep it until 2011 - we used it 3 times last year for bongoing and about a 1000 times for moving house/going to the tip/ikea and wickes

Reckon we need a van.

Looking at the rust is like trying to not look at a cut on your hand!

Hello V Bug

The 6 years rust free is the guarantee that rustmaster give. Have to have it looked at once a year to check no coating has been rubbed off.

Cost was about £460 give or take a few quid. Quite a investment. But prevention better than cure.

Yes I believe they coated the inside of the door. I'm a trusting type. so did not watch them do it. But am cleaning up a lot of wax off the door sils so hopefully they will be well coated.

Think its one of those things will see in a few years time if it has rust. And If it has then will take it back and sure it will be sorted.

Dave,
Great that ur protecting ur vehicle ,great that they steam clean etc before aplication.Have done the same job many times its messy.
Can understand 6 yrs guarantee on a new vehicle freshly Ecoated primered and painted .
How can rust master offer that kind of guarantee ,when the rust is more than likely in the vehicle.Waxoyl will help slow it down but not prevent it totally. I had a lifetime guarantee on some double glazing ,guess what firm folded after 2yrs.
Firstly cant imagine that they probe a vehicle with a camera or go into a detailed examintion before application would take too long. Every vehicle is rusting away at different rates from new and especially when a few years old or older, especially in our cold climate.
Ive had vehicles dipped in acid tanks and ecoated to remove rust and still wouldnt describe them as rustfree ,nor would i guarantee it.
Is there a charge for inspections etc?

Mike i have a body roller that i can strap to any vehicle with four wheels and waxoil can be had for around £20 for 5 litres ok no pro stuff ,but like cheap oil and filters u do it more often .
No brainer done loads messy job ,not a bad earner for peeps tho

All I can say is that

If I did not get the van coated it would rust. (as everyone I saw about 15 in total all had rust on them)

So choose to put my faith and money in this firm. (i'm happy with the service)

Time will tell if I'm right or wrong?

Supose it's one of those things,
either a glass 1/2 empty or glass 1/2 full, and I think the glass is just right thank you.

David.

Meeting up with coolent hyden next week so should have the other 2 jobs done. Bongo is coming on.

Also the job I do their is no way I could do the coating myself, as it would not be safe for me to go to work covered in dirt/wax/solvent.
+ I hate jobs like that. Would rather do a weeks work and pay someone else to do it with the correct product and tools. Even if it takes them 4 hours to do it.

Hi David,

I wonder if VeeBug is confusing Bongo's with recycled washing machines :D

My other toy is made of steel, and has been sat in salt water for the last 30+ years, properly treated, she'll outlast me!

Well done for the recommendation, keep on postin'

dave,
Opinions are like a*** holes everyones got one and its the internet.
Not knocking u for what u have done at all uve made a positive step towards preserving ur vehicle. :D
6 years rustfree is unrealistic  in my opinion.
If u want to base ur whole opinion of this excellent site on someone giving a truthful if somewhat negative opinion then so be it ,im new and do not speak for the whole board.
Nothing personal at all just a straight talker ,on a positive note i was bongoed today and had a membership voucher slipped under my wiper today by Ian . :D

Paul
Dave note that uve removed ur origional post peace out anyways.

Did it work ? Im wondering how to get to my inner arches too. Ive got a full conversion on one side just make the job more interesting.

I always heat the waxoyl can on a portable camping stove much easier to paint or spray then (obviously dont do this with the aerosol cans.)
