erratic idle

i just came home and the bongo seems to be revving erraticly when idleing up to about 2000 rpm when in neutral. when driving all appears fine but in neutral or drive when stationary revs are climbing high on their own.

Any idea's oh it a 4wd diesel.

You should make sure the moving parts of the throttle mechanism on the injector pump are clean and nothing's binding. I haven't looked at the throttle linkage on mine, so I don't know what it looks like -- press the pedal while looking at the injector pump.

If the throttle linkage is fine, it's probably worth replacing the fuel filter, and perhaps running a good diesel injection and intake system cleaner through the system (such as BG 244). Next you could look for air leaks into the intake system. These are potential cures for tackling idle roughness and surging in fuel injected cars generally -- but maybe someone on this forum has some ideas about likely causes of surging idle in bongos specifically.

I'll be intersted to hear what its like when you start it up this morning (i.e. will it behave the same from cold). I'm no techie but nfn's advice above sounds good. If that doesn't work, could the throttle position sensor cause anything like that? Worth having a search (try also 'TPS' as its often referred to as that on here) to see what you might learn as it gets discussed quite often. Or else no doubt a techie will be along in a bit.

Clean fuel filter & banjo filter would be the first stop for me I reckon, factsheets for both in the members area. Are there any signs of diesel leaking around the fuel pump under the drivers seat? could be the seals need replacing, again, there's a fact sheet in the members area.

i have spent all day changing suspension on my daily driver a citroen c3.
thats now done and i have a look at the injection pump and the cable is free and returning no problem. i have left it running for about five minutes and all seems ok idle about 1000 for the first few minutes then dropping down to about 800.
i will have to see how it goes on a run tomorrow will report back then.

That sounds about right from cold then, it could be the vent in the filler cap maybe if it's happening after a run, try undoing it if the symptoms start, & see what happens. May just need a new filler cap?

Something I've not noticed before on that diagram, part 42-113 'FILTER,FUEL TANK'. It can be seen at the bottom of the pick-up tube in the top left hand section. There's another pesky filter that may become clogged over time . It's probably quite a coarse mesh filter, but still a potential problem area.

It's not much of a filter, it's just a plastic jobby, but it's not unknown for the pick up to get blocked if you get crud in your tank. If it does get blocked it can usually be cleared by blowing back down the fuel line, but obviously it's best to remove aything capable of obstructing it from the tank.

You didn't have to go outside at this time of night to strip down the fuel tank - it could have waited until the morning . Is there anything Bongo related that you don't have a picture of?

Plenty I'd imagine, just happen to have checked all my sender etc out before starting on floor fitting I'll be replacing the short lengths of fuel hose as a precautionary measure, after all the fuel supply hoses are supposed to be changed evry (4?) years I think on th service schedule

all was well this morning but after a drive of a few miles th high idle was back when i stopped for fuel. idle speed is nearly 2000 rpm.
after refuelling and a much longer drive to and from london all appears to have returned to normal.
an odd one this and although i hope to not see it again i will have wait and see.
