just changed the damaged coolant pipe today and thought after other peeps comments ill change the oem stat to a proper mazda stat.
i would recommend that anyone changing should stick to the genuine part. we have a mason on ours and it was usually sitting at around 10 past midpoint on the gauge with occasional going nearly to the bottom of the H.
id never heard the fans come on, despite knowing they worked when disconnected in the engine bay. when it came to bleeding got bottom hose hot etc, bled it no probs then caned it to see if i could get the fans to come on. after a good 10 minutes reving away it just managed to kick the fans in then temp shot down. been for a good 30 mile run tonight to check things out and although i was up and down a few hills and speeding, the temp guage just wont go much past midway now. i real happy now that i think the cooling system is finally behaving itself after 4 yrs.

Great result, do have the Mazda part number? on the receipt I expect or maybe the box, I'd like to get one myself but being downunder I'd like to go in the Mazda parts dept fully armed, they can be quite dismissive about grey imports

I have just ordered a genuine stat from Newport mazda and was shocked and very pleased to find the cos was £18.31. :D

from the invoice the part number for the thermosta is kl0115171a, total cost in york mazda is £16.34.

Spot on - Mazda reference KL01-15-171A

dreamwarrioruk - where did you get it from at that price? (or did I miss it somewhere above?)

from our local mazda dealer. they guy had said it was gonna be 15.46 but the invoice clearly says 13.91 (ex vat)
got 10% discount for some reason, im not gonna complain. the coolant pipe was £7.60+ vat also cheap imo

So it's smoothed out the temperature fluctuations?

Now I bought a genuine one but it arrived the day after the garage had put the generic one I got in.

I did test the Mazda one against the generic one that was removed.
The Mazda one opened a few degrees earlier and opened much faster.

It is definitely getting changed when my remaining hoses arrive.

Also, the rubber seal on the Mazda one has a locating 'ear'. I presume this lines up with the jiggle pin?

It's realy reasuring to know the genuine stat has improved things :) It does make me think my temperature fluctuation is related to a lazy stat....time will tell.

Fingers crossed, with all new hoses and a genuine stat I should eventually be ok. [-o<

PS. I've waved at 2 Bongo's in York, were you one?

All the ones I tested (majority being Blueprint) have the locating 'ear', and yes, the jiggle pin should be in line with the ear. The reason this is important is that when the stat is fitted (correctly) it positions the jiggle pin at the highest point on the flange ensuring any trapped air in the hose from the radiator goes to this point and gets expelled through the jiggle pin hole. (hope that made sense) :oops:

That makes perfect sense....... :)

It looks like my Bongo had a pattern stat fitted that was not located properly when I bought it too then :(

Someone certainly screwed the cooling system up good and proper.
The last few hoses and the genuine stat should hopefully sort things once and for all.

To be absolutely honest, I didn't find that much difference in the operational performance (when tested in a pan of hot water) between a Blueprint (pattern) stat and a genuine Mazda stat.
I took a Blueprint apart and measured the individual components and recorded every feature, including the internal seal. Not actually dissected a Mazda stat yet, but have got one in transit so I'll 'do a job' on it when it comes. Will be interesting to see the differences.
The main external difference is that the Mazda stat has an extra wiper seal that the Blueprint doesn't - a feature that keeps the sliding parts clean. Inside? don't know..............YET

The Blueprint is very well engineered and under normal circumstances I can see no reason that it cannot cope.
On the other hand, the Mazda stat has at least one extra feature (the wiper seal) which I personally like.

Having said all that, when my stat needs replacing, it will be the genuine Mazda

Well, the one I tested it against was the one that had been taken out, so it may have been old and sluggish.

Also, that one and the new pattern one did not have a locating ear. So, if I'd not splashed out on a genuine one I wouldn't know about this!

just changed stat and coolant on my new bongo,there were no issues previous,mason adjusted temp readings were at one oclock,the previous owner stated no maintenance had been done at all in the two years they had owned it,
removed stat and found it to be gen mazda,put in new gen mazda new coolant red,and bleed,
temps now read,12oclock,so question,

do mazda stats also fail in time,the answer must be yes me thinks! this stat could be much older than 2 years.

how much of the noted temp change is down to new coolant??
