how long with pELA

I'm draining the engine oil with my new Pela. It's been going for about 30 mins and removed just over 4 litres. I keep giving it a few extra pumps every 7/8 min. Should it be taking this long?

Should be quicker than that if engine oil is warm. But it needs repumping more often than 7-8 mins I think as the vacuum decays to zero as oil is sucked up and it happens (on mine) much quicker than that.

My view overall though is I don't care if it takes a while becuase it is not requiring my attention anyway except for re-pumping every few mins (you can tell from the 'feel' whether the vacuum is exhausted). Don't pump more than instructions though (25 strokes?) as you don't want to overload it.

As Mike says, it sounds like your oil isn't hot enough - mine didn't take that long

Thanks fror replies - it was hot when I started...! I noticed that I had not removed the filler cap and wondered if that had any bearing on it - need air in to push out so to speak so I removed that and going a bit quicker but not much. Maybe the oil has become thick. As Mike mentioned I will pump it more often.

I suspect that is why its (appeared) to take so long

Just did mine after a run in it. Only took about 5-10 minutes to drain with it warm & that included putting 0.5litre of clean oil in to flush & suck that out too. You can hear it pouring in & slowing down, then just keep pumping every minute or so.
Leave the suction tube attached to the container when it's done & clip it up so it drains anything left in the tube back into the container.
Oil change done in about 15 minutes, no mess no fuss

Oil every 5,000km, filter every 10,000km as it says in the book. I know modern oils can last a lot longer but do you want to be taking short-cuts with your motor?

For those who doubt that the Bongo is capable of being a sturdy reliable high mileage beast, all I can say is:
