Idea's needed, non bongo related

Post by wishmaster » Mon Jun 07, 2010 12:43 pm

Hi, my daughters nissan micra has developed a noise in the gearbox in 4th & 5th gear only, sounds like a bearing, tried some thicker oil type products (no real improvement) but wondering do any of you have any remedies 'old or new' that i could try  , she's a student so funds are low and a replacement box is out of the question :( . The car's only done 36k and everything else is great.

Any idea's my friends will be greatfully recieved

Thanks Izzy

Hi Izzy,

Note from your post that you have tried thicker oil or similar

I have in the past had good results with slick50, about £20ish or can be found on offer.

If it was mine I'd give it a go.

All the best

If there's no 'magic remedy' could you could strip the box down and just replace the worn part, in case/before it damages another part? I'm thinking an early intervention may be cheaper in the long run.
There's also a useful Micra forum on this link which may be helpful for you.

i replaced my gearbox on an 03 c3 a couple of years ago, i placed a breakers request online and got offered one the following day for £150 took it as i needed doing asap and no problems since.
trouble was a couple of days later i was offered loads from other breakers from as low as £80 so dont rule out replacement it may be cheaper than you think.

You're right. :) On the Micra forum there's a gearbox for £30 and another for £50, there are good buys around.
