thanks ady and wonkanoby. Hopefully we're getting somewhere =D>

At what point should I hear the solenoid click (once it reaches 20˚C, or when I turn the key)? I guess if I'm not seeing the poker-widget thing (is that the technical term for it :D ) I highlighted in the pic move at all on cold start, somethings not working (either one of the solenoids or connection to poker-widget). Think I'll let the garage diagnose that though.

I'm watching this with interest. Had exactly the same niggle for over a year now. Garage tested the glowplugs, Missfixit & Ady sorted the fast idle relays.

Still the same.

Looking forward to a resolution.

if it is really cold then put your finger on the left hand one, turn the key but dont start it up, you should feel this one click,if there is enough vaccum the throttle will pull across to the left,if no vaccum held in the system this may move once the engine has started.

the left one should operate for a few mins max, then the right hand one clicks, and the throttle drops to half way off, this will stay like this for maybe 10 mins depending on the ambient air/engine temp, then it will drop off altogether,(2 stage cold start).
this right hand one also pics up the throttle when you push the aircon button to pick up the revs to compensate for the compressor load on the engine.

when fully off, the end of the throttle cable must push the plunger on the extreme right.

all the above pressumes that all the little vac pipes are intact, check all around these solenoids etc as they become brittle with the heat and break off where they connect to the valves.
