Through France to the Italian Lakes: Any Tips?
Hello, fellow bongo-travellers! In early June, we are planning to travel through France, and then on to the Italian Lakes. This will be our first bongo-outing abroad. Have read the assorted pieces of helpful advice, but wondered if anyone could offer up-to-date info on : best route (no mountain passes, please!); best stopover spots (can you just sleep overnight at an aire, or is a legit campsite preferable?); any other tips for France/ Italy/ the Lakes. All tips gratefully received! Chris and Sue

No Mountain passes?
You won't want to drive through Val d'Isere and over the Col d'Iseran then - the highest mountain pass in Europe. 2770m at the highest point.
Go on, you know you want to!!
Once we were in Italy, we went to Turin - no likey, so moved on. Spent the night near Arona on the shore of Lake Maggiore - very pretty. We went on to Verona, lovely - but hosing it down with rain - and then on to Venice. "Camping Jolly" at Mestre just outside Venice was spot on.
After that we went through into Slovenia on the advice of Dandy Warhol of this forum. We went in August, and the Italian lakes are just mobbed. Slovenia is a brilliant country. Ljubljana is a lovely city, and Lake Bled is on a par with the Italian 'big 3' but nice and quiet.
We took the long way out of Slovenia - another monster mountain pass into Austria.
There are other ways, but they are pretty much motorway - where's the fun in that?

We'll be watching this thread with interest. After last year's brilliant tour of Spain and France, we're doing France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Monaco this year Got a rough idea of the route, but needs plenty of fine tuning.

If you don't want mountain passes try the Mont Blanc Tunnel otherwise its a long way round.
Stop off in Chamonix before the Tunnel and go on the Midi cable car, watch out for the altitude 12000ft, could make you dizzy.
Train to the Mer de Glace, fabulous.
Once round the Italian Lakes, if you hear a loud two tone horn watch out. It will be a crazy Italian bus driver going like the clappers and they are usually on the wrong side of the road.
