A couple of new noises

Hi guys, my freda started to make clunking noises at the front about a month ago at the front, I had a feel about and found tgat tge drop links had play in them, so I canged the and the noise went (I fit new ones).

Now 4 week later another clunking noise has started, ive checked the recently fit links and they are sound and I cant seem to locate any other loose link etc, has anyone got any suggestions, if so many thanks.

Also when I put right hand down whilst driving a HUM has appeared, but when driving in a straight line or left hand down there is no hum, again im not sure where to look, can anyone help??

Knocking could be anti-roll bars bushes/ brackets.
Hum could be low power steering fluid.

Just had a look at and a good tug and pull on on the anti roll bar near the rubbers and can't seem to get any play, does this procedure require the weight of the vehicle on or off the floor (the wheels).

Also checked steering reservoir and it full,

I fitted new drop links and a few weeks later got another clunk develop slowly - checked and the droplinks seemed fine to haul around on, but snugged one of the nuts up again and the noise went away. Did you put a pair of spanners to your droplinks when you checked them?

Is your clunk apparent when going over bumps, round corners/listing, etc...? When stationary, turn the steering wheel back and forth... anything?

Balljoints in the wishbones might be another thing to check.

Yup. And just in case it matters, is it 4 wheel drive?

No I didn't check the drop links with spanners and when stationery there is a slight knock when I move the wheel left to right when the engine is off but when running there is no sound, and yes the noise appears when going over bumps in the road.

Yes it is 4 wheel drive. Why would this matter?

CV joints on 4wds can knock.

Double check the drop link nuts - under load, the bolt can slop around inside the bolt holes in the antiroll bar - at least that's what mine were doing.

Query track rod ends?

What do I need to look for in track rod ends, Play, will they be loose?

And is the cv joint something to worry about?

With the van on the ground, cup a hand over the track rod ball end and get someone to rock the steering wheel - should be apparent if there is anything there.

Re CV joints - I don't know... they're drive rather than suspension or steering though... IIRC, one test is to try pulling away hard at full lock and listen/feel for knocking.

Another easy check is the universal coupling on the steering column where it goes into the rack. Get yourself up under and have someone rock the steering. Likely not to be loose, but easy enough to check if you can locate it and worth spraying some white grease on it while you're looking at it.


I think generally, jack the front end up onto stands and give the wheels a good wiggle - holding at 3/9 and then 12/6. You might be able to narrow it down that way.

i get a rattle off mine at the front and tracked it down to being a loose break pad...the fitting kit around it much have given in and dissapeared. Garage said its not dangerous just that theres a bit of movement there, but they couldnt get hold of a replacement. I'll keep my eyes peeled for breakers yards!!
