urgent - think i've put too much oil in :(

Post by hwyaden » Sat Nov 23, 2013 12:27 pm

i wondered why the oil level was always low. i checked it this morning while i was parked on the road (as opposed to our drive which is on a slope) and the oil level seems to go up to the kinky bit in the dipstick, way over the full mark. when i checked it on the drive it was well under full so i'm guessing i've been checking it wrong  i've been driving to cardiff every day for the past week with it like this and i'm scared i've done some damage now.

how can i get the excess oil out easily? i tried going under the car earlier but couldn't fit so i guess if i take the nut off the bottom i'll have to jack the car up first. i called in halfords to see if they had a syringe to take it out of the dipstick but as usual they were useless, and my local mechanic isn';t there today. i have to be in cardiff again this afternoon so i need some advice fast. #-o ](*,)

If you're brave enough to drive to North Somerset I'll do it for you.

not that brave but thankyou for the offer, that's really kind!!!
i'll get a pump but it won't arrived until monday. will it hurt the car to do 2 60 mile round trips before then? it's not showing any signs of anything wrong apart from smelling a bit when it's really hot (after driving over the mountain) or am i better off laying it up for the weekend?

I wouldn't like to call that one, but someone with more mechanical knowledge than me might chip in.

Otherwise is there a friendly garage nearby who could lift Bongy on the ramp?

This is only a couple of minutes work. [-o<

i think i'm going to try jacking it up and loosen the nut underneath. where does the jack fit underneath the car?

Don't work underneath the vehicle on a jack.

Not for anything.

Good luck.

Anyone near with ramps? Possibly drive 2 wheels on kerb?

If you have Halfords nearby you could buy a breaker bar to crack the nut.

If you've been running around for a week, then a few more days probably won't make any difference. You could knock up a pump using a bicycle pump fitted with a length the plastic tubing like to get on aquariums or windscreen washers. That would allow you to insert the pipe into the dipstick tube and suck up oil into the pump and then empty into suitable container. Probably a bit messy, but it's the sort of thing you could make from bits at a DIY or car store.

If the drive's concrete the degreaser may well do it. If its Tarmac it may well break up. :(
