4x4 alloys and diff winding

Post by Tanuki » Tue Feb 10, 2015 11:11 pm

Hi I've been warned that fitting 18" RX alloys to my 96 4x4 can cause the diffs to wind up so I have a few questions.

To the best of my knowledge RX wheels are the same all the way round correct?

If I fitted these and kept the same rolling radius as the standard 15" wheels would I be right in thinking how can this possibly damage my diff?

How can you tell if you have a normal diff or an LSD?

And follow on from above is it possible to cause diff winding if I have an LSD bongo?

Sorry if these questions seem stupid but I have done a search.

Cheers

With the same size wheels and tyres all round I can't see how this would effect the diffs. :?

This was my thinking especially if I keep the same rolling radius as standard.

I'm not sure this is possible though with 18"s

Apparently to keep the same rolling radius as standard you would need

225/45/18 rear
205/55/18 front

Yep, as long as all four are same rolling circumference you can't get diff wind up. What is not widely known is that tyres of the same size can actually be a different circumference from different manufacturers. Another reason why mixing different types and brands of tyres is not wise idea.

Interesting, so you would need to use the tyre sizes I put above to keep the same rolling radius as the standard tyre...

Or put your diff at risk

This was the converter I used

Converting from:

195/70/15 front
215/65/15 rear

Just fit same size all round :). Doesn't necessarily have to match the original rolling circumference but if it did then it would keep the gearing and speedo reading standard.

#-o well ive had my rx8 wheels on for 7 years now

the only whining I hear is her is the passenger seat because the music is too loud lol

all my tyres are the same size and pumped up to 48 psi

if you want to know the make and size - let me know

I don't know the name and size off hand - but ive stuck with the same name and size as I had on originally

always served me well

Fit 225/45x18 all round - no need for different sizes on front and rears.
Just make sure that the loading is at least 96 - most tyres of that size are below 96.

it doesnt matter if its a lsd, but if you need to know/want to know, jack up the back wheels, turn one wheel, if the other side goes the opposite way its a standard diff, if it goes the same way its a lsd

Hello mate
I had RX8 wheels on my last Bongo and they look really cool.
I have one and tyre in the swaps section.
In all honesty my experience showed that you only have to clip a curb and you take a big chunk out of the tyre wall.
The AWD was less responsive too.
They look great but are not the best for getting off wet festival grounds etc.
I would not have them on again!

Another way to tell if the diff is limited slip is to look for a yellow paint blob on it.
The lsd takes a slightly different oil to the normal and front diffs

I agree that RX8 wheels look good but the ride quality suffers, i've had these 15" alloys on for years without loosing the comfort of the origionals.

I have fitted 17" wheels with a slightly larger rolling radius tyres and it is the best modification I have made, the gearing is raised for better more relaxed cruising and there is less body roll.

Rustyp - that's exactly what we did and it worked well for us to.
